Tom Heil enters his third season as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Baldwin Wallace University in 2017-2018. His first two teams have produced a 31-24 record and showed great improvement. Last year's team advanced to the 2017 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Game.
In three seasons as a college head coach, Heil has three straight winning seasons, a 53-31 career record with a .631 winning percentage, two conference championship game appearances with one league title and a berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
"Our goals are the same each season," said Heil. "Our goals are to work extremely hard in the classroom, on the court and in the community; have fun and be competitive; and win both the OAC regular season and tournament titles, advance to the NCAA Division III National Tournament and win a national title.
"Our young men know this is not an easy task," said Heil, "but each young man is committed to being the best possible student, player and citizen while achieving a championship. We have a great atmosphere here at BW and we are excited about the future."
In 2016-2017, Heil's team finished 15-13 overall and advanced to the OAC Championship Game. His squad also won the season-opening St. Mary's (Md.) Dan Greene Memorial Tournament and scored 121 points in a win versus Pitt-Greensburg (Pa.). He had two players earn All-OAC honors and two earn Academic All-OAC acclaim.
In his first season at BW, Heil led his squad to a 16-11 record that included winning the Medaille (N.Y.) College Invitational Tournament and a thrilling, last second victory at OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University when the Blue Streaks were ranked No.4 in Division III. He also mentored two All-OAC players and four of his student-athletes earned Academic All-OAC accolades.
Heil returned to BW in the spring of 2015 after serving as the head coach at Defiance College for one season. He led the Yellow Jackets to a 22-7 record, including a 15-0 mark at home. Defiance captured both the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season and HCAC Tournament titles. Heil guided his team into the NCAA Division III National Tournament where it posted the school's first-ever NCAA Division III National Tournament victory by knocking off the defending national champions.
Heil played four seasons of varsity basketball at Bluffton University. During his time with the Beavers, Heil was twice named to the Academic All-HCAC team. He also captained the 2006-2007 squad that finished with a school-record tying 18 wins.
Heil earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration at Bluffton in 2007. He continues to work on his Master of Arts in Sports Science degree.
Tom and his wife, Kathleen, were married in August of 2013 and have a son.
