NEW CONCORD, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team won its first Ohio Athletic Conference dual match as it defeated Muskingum University, 44-9, on Performance Court in the Muskingum Recreation Center.
With its win, BW improved to 4-3 in overall dual matches and 1-2 in the OAC. Muskingum dropped to 0-12 overall and 0-3 in the OAC.
The Yellow Jackets were lead by freshman 165-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood) and freshman 285-pounder Joe Belford (Berea/St. Edward) each won by pin. Shapiro defeated Skylar Caldwell in 3:49 and is now 22-11 with three pins. Belford defeated Bass Conway in 2:10 and is now 16-15 with eight pins.
In addition, junior 141-pounder Andrew Taylor (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) won by technical fall over Ben Barnhart-Sullivan 19-4, 7:00, improving his record to 15-14. Freshman 174-pounder Ben LeBrun (Strongsville) won by decision over Mitchell King 10-6 improving his record to 15-15.
Winning by forfeit were, freshman 125-pounder Jesse Gunter (Akron/Copley), freshman 133-pounder Jacob Landers (Liberty Township/Lakota East), freshman 149-pounder Joe Schmidt (Hinckley/Brunswick) and freshman 157-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep).
Gunter, who is ranked eighth individually in the latest NCWA (National Wrestling Coaches Association)/ Brute-adidas poll, improved to 25-1 with 23 straight wins as he won by forfeit. Landers is now 5-12, Schmidt improves to 16-11 and Chase now has a team-leading 28-10 mark.
BW is back in action this Saturday, February 2 when the Yellow Jackets host the 27th Annual John Summa Memorial Tournament in the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse at 10:00 a.m.
