Baldwin-Wallace College Baseball Team Splits Twinbill with Transylvania (Ky.) in Florida

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split a doubleheader against Transylvania (Ky.) University today (Monday, March 9, 2009) in Winter Haven, Florida on the second day of its annual spring break trip.  Transylvania won the first game, 3-1, and B-W won the nightcap, 9-2.

With its split, the Yellow Jackets are now 1-2 overall and play a single, nine-inning game tomorrow versus Dubuque (Iowa) at 3:00 p.m. in Winter Haven.

In the first game, the Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior ESPN THE MAGAZINEAcademic All-American centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) scored via a single by junior Chris Nealon (Avon Lake). Nealon led B-W with a pair of base hits.

Transylvania took advantage of a number of B-W defensive miscues in the bottom of the second inning to score all three of its runs to close out the scoring.

On the mound, senior Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere) took the hard-luck loss as he allowed eight base hits and three runs (only one earned) in five innings. Freshman Jon Connelly (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) allowed one hit in his lone inning of relief.

In the second game, the Yellow Jackets scored five runs with two outs in the second inning. B-W then added four more in the third to counter single runs by Transylvania in the second and fourth.  Offensively, senior 2-time All-OAC first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/Edgewood) went 2-for-3 with a homerun and four runs batted in. Kidd doubled in a pair and junior shortstop Jim Martin (Euclid) was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

On the mound, junior Justin Novak (Strongsville) tossed a complete-game, allowed seven hits, and struck out three.
