CRAWFORDSVILLE, INDIANA – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team competed today (Friday, September 21, 2012) in the first of the four-day ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Central Region Tournament hosted by Wabash College at two separate Indiana high school sites.
Seven Yellow Jacket singles and three doubles teams are participating. This is the second of three fall weekends of competition for BW during its non-traditional season. Last weekend, BW defeated both Thiel (Pa.) College and Penn State Behrend University in dual matches. Next weekend, BW participates at the Oberlin College Invitational.
In singles play today, senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference player Joe Horvath (North Royalton), freshman Peter Harris (Akron/ Revere) and junior Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet) all advanced to tomorrow's action as each posted a mark of 1-1. Horvath won his first match by defeating Joshua Cogan of Washington (Mo.) by scores of 4-6, 7-5, 6-2; but he fell in straight sets to Phillip Locklear of Earlham (Ind.). Harris defeated Kevin Bayles of Augustana (Ill.) in his first match by scores of 6-2, 3-6, 6-2; but fell in his second match to Ross Putterman of Washington (Mo.) in straight sets. Minrovic dropped his opening match in straight sets to Jared Goldstein of Kenyon but then recovered to defeat Samuel Wilke of Wittenberg in straight sets, by scores of 6-0 and 6-3.
In addition, sophomore All-OAC player Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) will finish up his first day of action tomorrow morning as his second match was delayed due to weather. Patterson dropped his first match to Wade Herrboth of Kenyon in straight sets. Freshman Doug Ganim (Olentangy/ Orange), junior Zach Elbin (Findlay) and junior Dan Rowsey (Ashland) all competed on day one but were unable to advance.
In doubles action today, the tandem of Ganim and Harris advanced to tomorrow's quarterfinals with a pair victories. They defeated Alex Dowley and Jordan Tingle of Greenville (Ill.) by a final of 8-1 and Kenneth Duncan and John Murray of Capital, 8-5.
The doubles teams of Horvath and Patterson and Elbin and Rowsey also saw action but unable to advance to tomorrow's matches.
Following the Oberlin Tournament, Sept. 28-30, the BW men are idle until returning to play this winter and spring during the traditional portion of its schedule.
