CRAWFORDSVILLE, INDIANA – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team competed today (Saturday, September 22, 2012) in the second of the four-day ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Central Region Tournament hosted by Wabash College at two separate Indiana high school sites.
Seven Yellow Jacket singles and three doubles teams began competition on Friday (Sept. 21). This is the second of three fall weekends of competition for BW during its non-traditional season. Last weekend, BW defeated both Thiel (Pa.) College and Penn State Behrend University in dual matches. Next weekend, BW participates at the Oberlin College Invitational.
In singles play, junior Academic All-OAC and CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District 7 student-athlete Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet) competed on the second day after having a 1-1 mark on the first day. In addition, sophomore All-OAC player Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) completed competition from Day 1. Freshman Doug Ganim (Olentangy/ Orange), junior Zach Elbin (Findlay) and junior Dan Rowsey (Ashland/ Senior) all competed on day one but were unable to advance.
Today, Minrovic lost to Cody Herbruck of Hope (Mich.) College by a score of 6-3 and 6-4. Patterson won his first match of the day against Graham Gettel of Denison University by injury default, captured his second match when he beat Nate Koelper of Wabash by the scores of 4-6, 6-0 and 10-6 in a tie-breaker and continued his streak by defeating Luke Tanaka of Elmhurst (Ill.) College by the scores of 6-3 and 6-4. Patterson will play again tomorrow morning at 9:00 against Ian Streicker of Wittenberg University.
In doubles action today, the tandem of Ganim and Peter Harris (Akron/ Revere) lost to the duo of Tim Noack and Seth Sankary of Washington (Mo.) University in the quarterfinals by the score of 8-4. The duo had a 2-0 mark on the first day to advance to the quarterfinals. The doubles teams of senior All-OAC and No.1 player Horvath and Patterson and the tandem of Elbin and Rowsey saw action on day one but were unable to advance to today's matches.
Following the Oberlin Tournament, Sept. 28-30, the BW men are idle until returning to play this winter and spring during the traditional portion of its schedule.
