Sophomore Patterson Plays on Third Day of ITA Tourney

CRAWFORDSVILLE, INDIANA –  Baldwin Wallace University sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference player Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) represented the defending OAC-champion Yellow Jacket men's tennis team today on the third of the four-day ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Central Region Tournament hosted by Wabash College at two separate Indiana high school sites.

Seven Yellow Jacket singles and three doubles teams began competition on Friday (Sept. 21). This is the second of three fall weekends of competition for BW during its non-traditional season. Last weekend, BW defeated both Thiel (Pa.) College and Penn State Behrend University in dual matches. Next weekend, BW participates at the Oberlin College Invitational.

Patterson ended the tourney with a 2-2 record as he lost today in the quarterfinals to Wittenberg's Ian Ricker by the scores of 6-3 and 6-0. Yesterday, Patterson won his first match of the day against Graham Gettel of Denison University by injury default and captured his second match when he beat Nate Koelper of Wabash by the scores of 4-6, 6-0 and 10-6 in a tie-breaker.

Patterson now has a 4-2 record this season and 31-5 for his career , including last year when he was 27-3 overall record, was tabbed All-OAC and as an ITA Scholar-Athlete. In addition to carrying a perfect 4.0 grade point average in business administration as a freshman, he helped to lead BW to a school-record 29 victories and a 29-1 overall record, both the OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles and both to its first-ever NCAA Division III National Tournament berth and first-ever NCAA tourney victory when they beat Earlham (Ind.) College.

Following the Oberlin Tournament, Sept. 28-30, the BW men are idle until returning to play this winter (indoors) and spring (both indoors and outdoors, depending upon the weather) during the traditional portion of its schedule. The Yellow Jackets then will look forward to defending their OAC title at the annual OAC Championship Tournament.
