NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule as it defeated Franciscan University, 6-3, at the North Ridge Racquet Club.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0) were also scheduled to play Penn State Behrend today but that non-conference match was postponed until February 28 due to inclement weather.
In doubles action, BW took an early 2-1 lead. The number one doubles team of junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC standout Peter Harris (Akron/Revere) and junior All-OAC player Doug Ganim (Westerville / Olantangy Orange) defeated brothers Zachary and Joseph Quiza in an 8-6 hard fought match. The number three tandem of junior Kevin Fredrick (Archbold) and sophomore Brian Carano (Akron/Revere) posted an 8-0 shutout against Joseph Staniszewski and Nicholas Behrens.
In singles play, the Yellow Jackets won four of the six matches. Harris won his first singles match by identical scores of 6-1 against Zachary Quiza. Ganim had the hardest fought match of the day at number two singles as he defeated Joseph Quiza, 7-6, 7-4 in the tiebreaker and 6-2. Sophomore
Jake Liebler (Medina) won his fifth singles match against Staniszewski by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Fredrick closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Connor Jooste at six singles.
BW is back in action on Saturday, February 21 when it hosts a men's and women's non-conference doubleheader against Alma (Mich.) College at the North Ridge Racquet Club at 6 p.m. The BW women's team also hosts Alma.
