MASON, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team won its eighth straight match and shut out Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg University, 9-0, to complete a 4-0 weekend shutout sweep at the 2015 OAC Invitational at the world-renown Linder Family Tennis Center north of Cincinnati.
Yesterday, BW (13-1, 3-0 OAC) recorded 9-0 shutout wins against non-league foe Waynesburg (Pa.) University and OAC rivals Marietta College and Muskingum University. The Yellow Jackets have not lost since a 5-4 loss to Carroll (Wisc.) College on March 9 on its annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina. BW also has compiled an 83-7 record the past four years (29-1 in 2012, 23-1 in 2013 and 19-4 last season).
In its match versus Heidelberg (1-10, 1-3 OAC), BW won all three doubles matches to build a 3-0 lead and captured all six singles matches.
In doubles play, BW won 24 of 26 possible points. The No.1 duo of junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC student-athletes
Peter Harris (Akron/ Richfield Revere) and
Doug Ganim (Westerville/ Olentangy Orange) won 8-0 to improve to 16-3 this season and 59-17 as a three-year combination and the 59 wins by the duo ranks tied for 16th all-time in school history.
In addition, the No.2 tandem of sophomores
Nathan Katz (Upper Arlington/ Bexley) and
Jake Liebler (Medina) won 8-1 to improve to 11-5 this season. The No.3 pairing of junior
Kevin Fredrick (Archbold) and
Brian Carano (Akron/ Richfield/ Revere) won 8-1 to improve to 13-3 this season.
In singles play, BW won 72 of a possible 80 points.
Harris won at No.1 by the scores of 6-1 and 6-1 to improve to 15-4 this season and 59-13 in his career and now stands tied for 16th on the all-time victory list. Also,
Ganim won at No.2 by the scores of 6-0 and 6-1 to improve to 14-3 this season and 56-13 in his career to rank 18th all-time.
In addition at No.3,
Katz won by the scores of 6-0 and 6-0 to improve to 11-7 this season. At No.4,
Liebler won by the scores of 6-3 and 6-2 to improve to 14-6 this season. At No.5
Fredrick won by a count of 6-0 and 6-0 to improve to 12-3 this season. At No.6,
Carano won by a 6-0 and 6-0 score and improved to 12-2 this season.
The Yellow Jackets return to action tomorrow, Monday, April 13 when BW hosts a special non-conference men's and women's double-dual match versus Grove City (Pa.) College at the "Pop" Collins Tennis Complex at 3:30 p.m. The BW men and women will both play Grove City at the same time, and the teams will alternate courts for both singles and doubles. In addition, the athletics department will assist the men and women teams and serve hotdogs and water to all fans in attendance.
