Men's Volleyball Tops Both Concordia Chicago and Medaille (N.Y.)

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's volleyball team took on Concordia University Chicago and Medaille (N.Y.) University in a home non-conference tri-match in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. The Yellow Jackets defeated both CUC and MU to improve to 11-2 overall.  

BW vs Concordia Chicago (1-4) : 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-13

BW was led by junior All-Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League outside hitter Michael Beard (Hilliard/Darby) as he tallied a career-high and match-high 29 kills, hitting .382. He also added eight digs and an assist. Junior outside hitter Nick Reilman (Medina/Walsh Jesuit) notched 11 kills, eight digs, and two aces.

After trading sets back-and-forth, the teams found themselves in the tie-breaking fifth set. After trailing 3-0 to start the game, BW tallied four straight points to go up 4-3 and force a Cougar timeout. CUC took its second timeout trailing four points (10-6 BW). Despite bringing the set within two points, the Yellow Jackets came out of their timeout to tally back-to-back kills by sophomore right side hitter Michael Devlin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Beard (13-9 BW). BW went on to claim the set (15-13) and the match (3-2).

BW vs Medaille (2-7) : 25-11, 25-15, 25-18

BW was led by Devlin as he tallied a match-high 15 kills and three blocks. Beard added another seven kills and added four service aces. Sophomore setter Evan Herbst (Hamburg, N.Y.) dished out 32 assists and added three digs.

BW got out to a commanding 13-6 lead over the Mavericks and never looked back. The Yellow Jackets finished set one on a 12-5 run, claiming the 25-11 set one win and hitting .619 as a team. The Yellow Jackets kept the energy in their favor, winning sets two and three by 25-15 and 25-18 final scores. BW hit .478 as a team, earning the revenge win over the Mavericks in straight sets.

The Yellow Jackets return to play on Thursday, February 9 as they host Carlow (Pa.) University for a non-conference match. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
