No. 6 Baseball Powers Past No. 16 Marietta

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 6 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team picked up an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep over No. 16 nationally-ranked Marietta College by scores of 2-1 (11 innings) and 7-3 on the Fisher Field. 

GAME 1 

BW (18-4, 4-1 OAC) was led by sophomore right-handed pitcher Dylan Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) threw a career-high 10 innings limiting Marietta (17-7, 3-2 OAC) to one run and six hits while striking out five. Senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) went 3-for-6 and drove in the winning run with a walk off single.

Scoring Plays

  • Marietta got on the board first in the first inning with an RBI from sophomore catcher Ty Davis on a groundout.
  • The Yellow Jackets responded in the fourth with an RBI single from sophomore utility Joey Marousek (North Royalton).
  • BW walked it off in the 11th with an RBI single between first and second from Capolupo

On the Mound

  • Snyder picked up the start going 10 innings and allowing just one run on six hits. He picked up a no decision in the game.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) pitched the 11th inning and struck out a pair picking up his fourth win of the season.

Beyond the Box Score

  • Snyder's 10 innings were the most pitched by a Yellow Jacket this season.
  • Sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
  • Capolupo's run batted in (RBIs) moved him into a tie for third in the OAC with 27 RBIs on the season.
  • Miller's fifth win on the season moves him into tie for first in the OAC with five wins on the season.
  • With seven strikeouts on the day, BW still holds the OAC lead for strikeouts. 

Game 2

BW (19-4, 5-1 OAC) was led by Kolenich who went 4-for-5 at the plate with a RBI and run scored. Senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) and senior All-OAC first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemone School) each led the team with two RBIs. Capolupo scored a game-high three runs.

Scoring Plays

  • Davis started off game two just like he did game one, putting the Pioneers ahead in the first with an RBI groundout.
  • Vonderhaar responded in the bottom of the first with a two-run double.
  • Junior catcher Mark Mohnickey, Jr(North Ridgeville/St. Edward) hit a solo home run right over the right field foul pole to make it a 3-1 game.
  • Kolenich kept the offense going in the second with an RBI double to left center.
  • The Yellow Jackets was able to get a few more runs in the sixth with a two-run single from Castillo and an RBI groundout from Marousek which made it a 7-1 game.
  • Marietta (17-8, 3-3 OAC) got two runs in the seventh with an RBI groundout from junior utility Nick Bonnizzio and a sacrifice foul out from senior All-American pitcher/outfielder. Trent Valentine.

On the Mound

  • Miller picked up the start after closing out game 1, he went five innings, allowing a run on four hits and striking out five.
  • Freshman right-handed pitcher Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) closed out the game and picked up the save after pitching three innings, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out a batter.

Beyond the Box Score

  • Miller picked up his second win of the day to improve to 5-0 which ties him for the OAC lead in wins.
  • Kolenich once again extended his hitting streak and is now second in the OAC with a .448 batting average.
  • Walker's save was the first save in his collegiate career.
  • Junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and Castillo have extended their hitting streaks to 11 games.

BW returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 11th for a road OAC doubleheader against the University of Mount Union on the Rafeld-Rogers Field at 1:00 p.m.
