Dominant Pitching Leads No. 3 Baseball Past Alvernia (Pa.)

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The No. 3 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Alvernia (Pa.) University by a score of 4-1 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Terry Park Sports Complex.

BW (5-2) began its 12-hit day with four hits and two runs in the first frame and extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Alvernia (5-4) joined the scoring with a run in the top of the seventh but the Brown and Gold answered back in the bottom of the inning leading to a 4-1 victory.

Scoring Plays

  • Bottom 1st - Senior first baseman Max Anastasio (Chesterbrook, Pa./Conestoga) got the scoring started with a two-run double
  • Bottom 4th - Senior catcher Mark Mohnickey Jr. (North Ridgeville/St. Edward) drove in his first RBI of the year with a sacrifice fly to right
  • Bottom 7th - Senior third baseman Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) singled to extend the BW lead

At the Plate

  • Junior second baseman Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls) led the offense going 3-for-4 with two singles and a double
  • Junior outfielder Brandon Gelpi (Monroeville, Pa./Central Catholic) and junior shortstop Noah English (Perrysburg) each recorded two hits
  • Anastasio also had two hits, scored one run, and recorded a team-high two RBI
  • Clark went 2-for-3 with two hits and one RBI

On the Mound

  • Junior right-hander Vince Dolcemaschio (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) received his first win as a Yellow Jacket after he pitched seven innings, including six shutout innings, tallying eight strikeouts and allowing only one run on four hits
  • Sophomore right-hander Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) threw two scoreless innings in relief to get the save allowing only one hit and striking out two
