No. 13 Baseball Sweeps Marietta in Doubleheader

BEREA, Ohio – The No.13 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team hosted and swept the Marietta College Pioneers in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader.

BW won a tight first game by a score of 6-4 thanks to a walk-off RBI double by junior first-baseman Ryan Gordon (Strongsville) in the bottom of the ninth inning. The second game was won more handily by the Yellow Jackets, with the final score being 11-2 to bring BW's record to 22-8 with an OAC record of 9-3.

Game One (6-4 BW)

Scoring Summary

Bottom 4th - Senior right-fielder John Panstares (Westlake/St. Ignatius) singled home BW's first run of the game and cut the Marietta lead to 3-1

Bottom 7th - Senior third-baseman Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) hit an RBI double to bring the score to 4-2 in Marietta's favor

Bottom 7th – OAC Hitter of the Week Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider (Grove City) hit a two-run home run to level the game at four

Bottom 9th - Gordon won the game for BW 6-4 with a walk-off RBI double


At the Plate

  • Ritlinger-Nirider went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, two walks and two runs scored
  • Kolenich went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two doubles
  • Gordon went 2-for-5 with a double and the game-winning RBI
On the Mound
  • Junior right-hander Will Henderlich (Madison) pitched two scoreless innings, with one strikeout, and allowed only one hit
  • Senior right-hander Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts and was credited with the win

Bottom 1st - Ritlinger-Nirider scored on a passed ball to give BW a 1-0 lead

Bottom 2nd – A Ritlinger-Nirider walk allowed junior catcher Mason Fixx (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) to score BW's second run of the game

Bottom 2nd - Sophomore designated-hitter Yuri Bellina (Medina/Padua Franciscan) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Yellow Jacket run number three

Bottom 2nd – Gordon hit an RBI single to push the BW lead to four

Bottom 2nd – Panstares hit BW's second sacrifice fly of the inning to give BW a 5-0 lead

Bottom 4th – Gordon brought his second RBI of the game home with another single to give BW a 6-1 lead

Bottom 4th – Junior second-baseman Jace Druschel (Tampa, Fla./George Steinbrenner) hit into a fielder's choice which brought home Bellina for a 7-1 Brown and Gold advantage

Bottom 6th - Junior Colin West (Westborough, Mass./Worcester Academy) came on as a pinch-hitter and hit a grand slam to bring the BW lead to 11-2


At the Plate

  • Gordon tallied a career high four hits in a game on 4-for-5 hitting and added two RBI
  • Bellina went 2-for-2 and added two walks and an RBI
  • West went 1-for-1 with a team-leading four RBI and his second career grand slam


On the Mound

  • Senior left-hander Brit Kostura (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Christian School) pitched 7 2/3 innings, gave up two runs, struck out eight, and threw 121 pitches
  • Sophomore left-hander Tyler Vogel (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and added two strikeouts
