BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College football team lost to number one-ranked Mount Union College, 14-0, today (Saturday, October 21, 2006) at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
With its victory, Mount Union remains undefeated at 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the OAC and beat the Yellow Jackets for the 12th straight time. B-W falls to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the OAC.
B-W had the first scoring chance in the first quarter when Adam Wilburn (Bucyrus/Wynford) missed a 38 yard field goal with 5:42 left in the first quarter. At the end of the quiet first quarter, the score was 0-0.
Mount Union was the first to score in the second quarter when senior quarterback Mike Jorris found junior wide receiver Pierre Garcon on a 48-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good making the score 7-0 with 9:36 left in the second quarter. Mount Union increased its lead to 14-0 with 15 seconds left before halftime when sophomore running back Nate Kmic scored on a three-yard run. The score came following a Yellow Jacket fumble on the first play from scrimmage and on the12-yard line with 1:09 left.
Offensively, B-W was led by freshman quaterback Anthony Gardner (Rocky River/St. Edward) who had 11 completions on 25 attempts for 123 yards. He was sacked seven times. Assisting Gardner on the running game was senior Brandon Heges who had 44 yards on 25 attempts. Mt. Union's Kmic led all runners with a game-high 215 yards in 35 attempts and caught a team-leading four passes for 35 yards. Jorris was seven-of-19 passing for 113 yards with the TD toss to Garcon.
Defensively, B-W sophomore linebacker Paul Burger (Mentor) led both teams with13 total tackles, nine of which were solo hits. Senior cornerback Jimmy Wochele (Richmond Heights) had 11 tackles. The Purple Raiders were led by junior safety Matt Kostelnik with 11 tackles. Mt. Union had seven quarterback sacks for the game and held B-W to 10 rushing yards in 39 attempts and outgained B-W on offense, 378-133.
The Yellow Jackets had a final opportunity to score with less than two minutes left in the game when they drove to Mount Union's one yard line, only to be turned away to end the game.
The Yellow Jackets next play on Saturday, October 28 when they host 20th-ranked Ohio Northern University at Finnie Stadium at 1:30 p.m. That game will be televised on a tape delay basis by SportsTime Ohio throughout much of the state of Ohio. The broadcast will take place at 9:00 p.m. The telecast will be replayed on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 6:00 p.m. Mt. Union next plays on Oct. 28 when it hosts fourth-ranked Capital University at Mt. Union Stadium in Alliance at 1:30 p.m.
