HOUGHTON, (N.Y.) – Sophomore attacker
Vinny Carson (Cleveland/ Benedictine) and freshman midfielder
Jarrod Gilliam (Lewis Center/ Olentangy Orange) each scored three goals as the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team defeated Houghton (N.Y.) College, 19-2, at Burke Field for its second straight victory to start the 2014 season. BW has now outscored its first two opponents, 37-4.
With its win, BW is 2-0 overall and next plays on Monday, March 10 when it hosts Olivet (Mich.) College on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea at 4:00 p.m. Houghton was playing its first match of the season and is 0-1 overall.
The Yellow Jackets led 3-0 after one perod, 8-0 at halftime and 14-1 after three stanzas. BW outshot Houghton, 63-16, including 24 shots in the second period, and had 55 ground balls to the Highlanders' 29.

James Wilhelm (Bay Village/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) and
Josh Piepenburg (Shaker Heights) and freshman midfielder
Tanner Roberts (Murraysville, Pa./ Franklin Regional) each had a pair of goals. Overall, twelve Yellow Jackets each had at least one goal. Freshman MF
Alex Fioritto (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit) led the way with eight ground balls.
In goal, sophomore
Jake Harders (Rocky River/ Lakewood St. Edward) started, played the first 30 minutes, did not allow a goal and did not have to make a save. He was replaced by freshman
Austen Peppo (Brunswick/ Parma Padua Fransiscan), who played 21:36, allowed one goal and made two saves; senior
Ray Caraballo (Cleveland/ St. Ignatius), who played 3:11, allowed a goal and made two saves; and freshman
Josh Low (Solon), who played 5:13, did not allow a goal and made one save.
In the first period, BW received goals from freshman attacker
Luke Happel (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Hampton),
Carson and
Firitto for its 3-0 lead.
In the second period,
Gilliam scored twice,
Carson again and freshman MF
Jake Rakich (Dublin/ Olentangy Liberty) and
Roberts each had a goal.
In the third stanza, BW received goals from
Gilliam, back-to-back tallies from
Wilhelm and another from freshman MF
Brent Wilhelmy (Rocky River) to build its lead to 12-0 before Houghton finally got on the scoreboard at 3:08 to make it 12-1. The Yellow Jackets got goals from
Piepenburg and
Roberts.
In the final quarter, BW received goals from
Piepenburg, sophomore MF
Steve Wozniak (Strongsville/ Parma Padua Fransiscan) and
Carson before Houghton had its final tally of the game to make it 17-2. The final Yellow Jacket goals were scored by freshman MF
Andrew Spicher (Erie, Pa./ McDowell) and freshman MF
Forrest Andrew (Brunswick).
Following its match versus Olivet, BW plays a pair of away matches next weekend when it travels to Steubenville, Ohio on Saturday, March 15 to play Fransiscan University at 1:00 p.m. and then goes to Hanover, Indiana on Sunday, Mardh 16 for a 2:00 p.m. match.
