Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game Versus Concordia (Texas)

AUSTIN, Texas  --  The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost at Concordia (Texas) University, 11-6, in the first of six games in five days in the State of Texas during its Annual Spring Break trip.  The loss ended a brief two-game winning streak.

The Yellow Jackets (4-4) gained a 2-0 lead with a run in each of the top of the first two innings before Concordia (7-7) tied it 2-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. BW forged ahead, 3-2 with a run in the fourth, but Concordia plated five run in the bottom of the frame to grab a 7-3 lead. BW cut the deficit to 7-5 with two runs in the sixth. Again Concordia gained some distance with one tally in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh to build a 10-5 advantage. Concordia scored its final run in the eighth. BW scored its final run in the ninth.

At the plate, sophomore catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/ Jonathan Alder) and senior pre-season All-American first baseman/ designated hitter Hunter Handel (Akron/ Green) led the way. Kaltenbach was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, his first home run of the season, a run batted-in (RBI) and a walk. Handel was 2-for-4 with a walk. In addition, sophomore left fielder Chase Knodle (Poland/ Seminary) was 1-for-3 with a run scored, two RBI, a walk and a stolen base.

On the mound, senior  right-hander Connor Murphy (Westford, Mass./ Northeast) started and pitched the first three and two-third innings, struck out two and did not walk a Concordia hitter, but he left with a 7-3 deficit. Sophomore Evan Lovick (Mentor) followed with one and one-third innings of scoreless relief and allowed one hit and struck out one. He was followed by junior righty Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) who pitched the next two-plus innings and sophomore righty Brandon Wysong (Bradford) who relieved Heffernan in the bottom of the eighth.

Tomorrow, BW travels to Seguin, Texas to play a single, nine-inning game versus Texas Lutheran University at 8 p.m.
