Volleyball Opens the Season with Two Victories

CORTLAND, N.Y. – In day one of the 2019 season and 35th annual Cortland Red Dragon Classic, the Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team sealed two victories against Nazareth (N.Y.) College and Fredonia (N.Y.).

BW vs Nazareth

BW conquered Nazareth in four sets; 25-16, 15-25, 25-18, 25-16. Leading the attack was junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference middle hitter Taylor Brown (Maple Heights), who tallied 10 kills and four blocks. Sophomore honorable mention right-side hitter Mary Zurbrugg (Alliance) marked six kills. Junior Academic All-OAC and All-OAC libero Sarah Reinhard (Willoughby/South) secured the back line with 14 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Morgan Martin (Seven Hills/Trinity) recorded 11. Facilitating the offense was junior setter Kathleen Egan (Cleveland/Beaumont) with 29 assists, who also had four blocks. Junior Academic All-OAC middle hitter Allison May (Louisville/St. Thomas Aquinas) led the squad with four service aces.

BW vs Fredonia

In the second match of the day, the Yellow Jackets defeated Fredonia in straight sets, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19. Zurbrugg and sophomore All-OAC outside hitter Ivy Earl (Howell, Mich.) led the charge for BW, amassing 13 and 12 kills apiece. Egan totaled 25 assists, three digs, and two kills. Reinhard recorded 19 digs and Martin had 12. Junior Academic All-OAC Alexis Garrett (Mentor) blocked two attacks.

Tomorrow the Yellow Jackets will play the host, Cortland (N.Y.) University at 10 a.m and will follow up with Marywood (Pa.) University at 12:30 p.m.
