Second-Half Comeback Falls Short for Men's Basketball in Loss to Capital

By: Erin Madden

BEXLEY, Ohio - The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team could not complete a second-half comeback, falling 65-60 to Capital University in the second game of a weekend series that took place inside The Capital Center.

Sophomore guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) led the way for BW (2-6, 2-6 OAC) with 19 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Jake Snyder (Akron/Archbishop Hoban), freshman forward Christian Pfeiffer (Amherst) and freshman guard Luke Driscoll (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) each put up identical totals of 10 points apiece, tying a career high for Driscoll

Freshman guard Carter Combs and sophomore forward Griffin Doseck tied for the team-lead for Capital (3-4, 3-4 OAC) with 12 points each.

In shades of Friday night's game, the Yellow Jackets got out to a big advantage early, forcing the Crusaders to burn a timeout down 10-2 at the 14:12 mark. Capital began to settle down, though, and took over the lead thanks to an 11-0 run. Driscoll came on late in the period with his own personal 6-0 run to help BW keep pace with the Crusaders. Both teams struggled from the floor, shooting a combined 33.8 percent in the half, as Capital held a slim 30-27 lead at the intermission.

A couple of small 5-0 runs helped the Crusaders build up to their first double-digit advantage of the game at 44-33 with 13:13 left. The Yellow Jackets seemed to have an answer for every score and managed to stay within a few possessions until David Sanford drilled a trey, forcing a timeout. Freshman guard Drew Wennes (Huron) highlighted a 9-0 run when he buried a three-pointer of his own and BW climbed back within two points at 55-53 with 3:53 remaining in the game. A Mazzeo triple eventually tied the game at 60-60 and just over a minute remaining but then Capital quickly answered with a three-ball of its own to regain the lead for good and eventually seal the 65-60 victory.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Friday, February 19, to host Heidelberg University at 7 p.m. inside Ursprung Gymnasium in the first game of the weekend series.
