No. 17 Women's Basketball Defeats Alma (Mich.) in BW Invitational First Round

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 17 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Alma (Mich.) College in the first day of the 2024 Baldwin Wallace Invitational by a final score of 56-46 in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. 

BW (8-1) now advances to the Baldwin Wallace Invitational Championship Game on Monday, December 30 at 3 p.m. where they will face off against Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University. Alma (5-6) will play the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the Baldwin Wallace Invitational Consolation Game on Monday, December 30 at 1 p.m.

BW Leaders

  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) led the team with 12 points and added four rebounds. She is now fourth in the OAC with 7.3 rebounds per game
  • Sophomore guard Laura McCoy (Newton Falls/Garrettsville Garfield) posted her second career double-digit performance with 11 points
  • Senior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) also scored 11 points for her fifth double-digit game of the season and added six rebounds
  • Junior Academic All-OAC guard/forward Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds
  • Senior All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) led the team with four assists
Alma Leaders
  • Junior forward Emmerson Goodin led the Scots with 16 points
  • Senior guard Brooke LeRoux recorded a game-high nine rebounds and added 10 points
  • Sophomore guard Cadence Kaminske dished out a game-best five assists

1st Quarter (BW 14-16)

  • Alma opened the game on a 10-2 run
  • A McCoy three tied the game at 14 and an Irwin jumper just before the buzzer gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the night

2nd Quarter (Alma 30-26)

  • The Yellow Jackets and the Scots traded leads five times 
  • Goodin scored seven of her 16 points

3rd Quarter (BW 42-40)

  • Ressler scored five straight points to give BW a 34-32 lead
  • Sophomore guard Kayla Jones (Grove City) scored four points and recorded two steals

4th Quarter (BW 56-46)

  • The Brown and Gold went on a 10-1 run through eight minutes of the quarter
  • Ressler added seven points to her total on the night
