Women's Volleyball Earns First Win of Season, Takes Two of Three at Wittenberg Fall Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Baldwin Wallace University women's volleyball team competed at the Wittenberg Fall Classic hosted by Wittenberg University where they fell to No. 24 nationally ranked Mount St. Joseph University and won the next two matches against Berea (Ky.) College and Illinois Wesleyan University in Pam Evans Smith Arena.

BW (2-1) opened the Classic on Friday with a near five-set upset of No. 24 Mount St. Joseph in the season opener by set scores of 27-25, 21-25, 25-21, 12-25, and 13-15. On Saturday, the Yellow Jackets took down Berea in straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-11, and 25-21 for Coach Kate Latkovic's first career win as head coach of the Brown and Gold. BW wrapped up the Classic winning a five-set thriller over Illinois Wesleyan by scores of 25-22, 14-25, 28-26, 19-25, and 15-13.

  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference libero Lauren Gardner (Avon/St. Joseph Academy) recorded a game-high 25 digs moving her to tenth on BW's All-Time Digs leaderboard
  • Senior All-OAC outside hitters Sam Rueda (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) and Brinn MacLellan (Novelty/Gilmour Academy) each had double-doubles in kills and digs. Rueda led the team in kills with 16 and had 12 digs while MacLellan added 14 kills and 10 digs in her first game as a Yellow Jacket
  • Junior Academic All-OAC setter Katarina Blazetic (DeLand, Fla.) tallied a career-best 37 assists
  • Junior outside hitter Gabby Schlecht (Naperville, Ill./North) finished with eight kills and 11 digs
  • Freshman middle hitters India Woodson (Oakwood Village/Bedford) and Josie Lynn (Wabash, Ind./Northfield) each recorded their first collegiate kills with four and three, respectively

  • Lynn led the offense with her first career 10-kill game
  • Senior middle hitter Sydney Simonson (Sullivan/Black River) led the team with two block assists and added five kills
  • Blazetic assisted 33 times
  • Gardner collected four aces and added 20 digs
  • Freshmen Yellow Jackets Maggie Hilliard (West Bloomfield, Mich.), Lyla Nash (Berkey/Evergreen), Blake Thomas (Sebring/Sebring McKinley), and Anna Stankard (Medina/Archbishop Hoban) all made their collegiate debuts

  • Schlecht led the team with 14 kills and added seven digs
  • Blazetic finished with a statline of 35 assists, 17 digs, and one assist
  • Woodson had seven more kills and hit .467 on 15 attempts
  • MacLellan got things done on both sides of the net as she totaled 18 digs and 10 kills
  • Gardner added 21 more digs to her totals on the weekend
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, September 4 as they host a non-conference match and the 2024 home opener against Hiram College at 7 p.m. inside Ursprung Gymnasium.
