ALBION, Mich. - The Baldwin Wallace University women's volleyball team competed at the Albion Invitational hosted by Albion (Mich.) College where they won one match out of three by defeating Albion and falling to the University of Chicago (Ill.) and Manchester (Ind.) University in Kresge Gymnasium.
BW (8-4) opened the Invitational by taking down the host Albion on Friday night in four sets by scores of 27-29, 25-20, 25-16, and 25-21. On Satuday, the Yellow Jackets then faced off against the Maroons of Chicago, who received votes for the national Top 25 poll, where they fell 3-0 by set scores of 15-25, 12-25, and 15-25. The Brown and Gold concluded the Albion Invitational falling in five sets to Manchester by set scores of 22-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-18, and 14-16.
vs. Albion (2-11)
- Senior outside hitter Sydney Simonson (Sullivan/Black River) and freshman middle hitter Josie Lynn (Wabash, Ind./Northfield) each tallied a game-high five total blocks
- Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference outside hitter Sam Rueda (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) had a game-high 18 kills
- Freshman outside hitter Bella Martinez (Newark) contributed 12 kills: her first time reaching double-digit kills
- Junior Academic All-OAC setter Katarina Blazetic (DeLand, Fla.) recorded her third game of 50+ assists finishing with 53
- Senior All-OAC libero Lauren Gardner (Avon/St. Joseph Academy) totaled 22 digs and has now posted 20+ digs in six of her nine matches this year
- Junior Academic All-OAC outside hitter Gabby Schlecht (Naperville, Ill./North) added eight kills and 10 digs
- Lynn also added 11 kills and three aces
vs. Chicago (11-2)
- Lynn led the team in kills with seven and hit .500 on 14 attempts
- Blazetic added a team-high 18 assists
- Simonson recorded six kills and hit .333 on 12 attempts
vs. Manchester (8-6)
- Freshman middle hitter India Woodson (Oakwood Village/Bedford) finished with seven total blocks and 10 kills
- Gardner tallied a team-high 18 digs
- Blazetic assisted 44 more times
- Rueda added 13 kills for a total of 33 on the weekend
- Lynn led the team with 14 kills
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, September 24 as they travel to Westerville to open Ohio Athletic Conference play against Otterbein University at 7 p.m. inside the Rike Center.
