No. 9 Women’s Basketball Falls in Low-Scoring Season Opener Against No. 20 Trine (Ind.)

ANGOLA, Ind. - The No. 9 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace women's basketball team opened the regular season as they fell to Trine (Ind.) University by a final score of 42-38 inside the MTI Center.

BW (0-1) opened the 2025-26 campaign against the Trine, the 20th nationally ranked team in the country, according to the WBCA. The Thunder came out hot and shut down the Yellow Jackets' offense throughout the first three quarters. A dominant fourth quarter down the stretch was not enough for BW, as they came up short.

BW Leaders
  • Academic All-OAC guard/forward Kayla Jones (Grove City) scored a team-high 14 points, while recording five rebounds and team-high two steals
  • Senior Academic All-OAC forward Brooke Thompson (Maineville/Little Miami) tallied eight points and shot 1-2 from deep
  • Senior forward Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) was a hound on defense, blocking a game-high five shots and added a steal as well
  • Senior guard Leah Riley (Cincinnati / Sycamore) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds
  • Junior guard Laura McCoy (Newtown Falls / Garrettsville Garfield) finished with six points

Trine Leaders
  • Sophomore forward Hailey Cole led Trine with 12 points and 10 rebounds
  • Freshman guard Callie Nichols recorded 10 points and three rebounds
  • Senior guard Addison Hudson finished with six points and three rebounds

1st Quarter (Trine 12-5)
  • Trine began the game on a 9-0 run, before sophomore forward Delaney Garcia (Lakewood) got the Jackets on the board with a free throw, followed by a Thompson layup
  • McCoy and Thompson led the team with two points each
  • Riley led all players by grabbing four rebounds
2nd Quarter (Trine 20-11)
  • McCoy scored the first bucket for the Brown and Gold with a layup
  • Jones recorded four points on two layups
  • Senior forward Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) tallied two blocked shots
  • The Yellow Jackets out-rebounded the Thunder 11-10 on the glass
3rd Quarter (Trine 30-16)
  • Jones recorded two points on a layup late in the quarter
  • BW reached the line four times and converted three attempts, while Trine did not attempt a free throw
4th Quarter (Trine 42-38)
  • Jones sparked BW's 22-point quarter with eight of her own
  • BW scored its first three pointer with 6:27 remaining in the game, courtesy of junior guard Ava Wilkerson (West Mansfield / Marysville)
  • The Jackets shot a game-high 53.8% from the floor and 37.5% from deep 
  • The Brown and Gold terrorized the Thunder, forcing five turnovers, blocking three shots, and recorded two steals
