No. 21 Women’s Basketball Defeats Marietta at Home After Strong Second Half

BEREA, Ohio - The No. 21 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace women's basketball team defeated the Marietta Pioneers by a score of 62-51 in a conference matchup in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Recreation Center. 

A strong second half propelled the Yellow Jackets (6-2, 3-0 OAC) over the Pioneers to remain perfect in conference play, with multiple contributors stepping up on offense to drive the comeback. 

BW Leaders (6-2, 3-0 OAC)
  • Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) recorded a team leading three blocks, one steal and two assists  
  • Senior forward Brooke Thompson (Maineville/Little Miami) led in points with 13 and rebounds with a career high of 14
  • Senior guard Leah Riley (Cincinnati / Sycamore) totaled seven points and gave out a team-high three assists 
  • Junior guard Ava Wilkerson (West Mansfield / Marysville) shot a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line while contributing two assists and six points 

Marietta Leaders (4-6, 0-2 OAC)
  • Kelsey Harlan led the Pioneers with 11 points and two assists 
  • TJ Carpenter and Amelia Uhrig each scored 10 points with Uhrig also leading in rebounds with six 
  • Abby Garner contributed six points and four rebounds 

1st Quarter (Marietta 15-10)
  • Thompson scored the Yellow Jackets' first points of the game with a layup off of a Jones assist 
  • BW out-rebounded the Pioneers 13-10
  • Jones and Miller each registered a block 
  • Thompson led in points with four 

2nd Quarter (Marietta 30-29)
  • BW scored five points in a row to take their first lead of the game 
  • Riley gave out two assists 
  • The Yellow Jackets outscored the Pioneers 19-15 to bring the game within one 

3rd Quarter (BW 47-42)
  • Riley led with seven points 
  • Sophomore forward Maddy Stumpf (Johnstown / Big Walnut) added a layup and assist 
  • The Brown and Gold defense stood strong with two blocks in the quarter 

4th Quarter (BW 62-51)
  • Jones and Thompson each went 2-2 from the free throw line
  • The BW defense held the Pioneers to single digits to finish the matchup 
  • Miller and Wilkerson each dished out an assist
