BEREA, Ohio - The No. 21 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace women's basketball team defeated the Mount Union Purple Raiders by a score of 54-52 in a conference matchup in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Recreation Center.
BW (4-2, 1-0 OAC) started off their conference schedule with a back and forth victory against conference foe Mount Union. A full team effort on both sides of the ball lifted the Yellow Jackets to a strong start in conference play, they look to build on this momentum in their upcoming conference matchup this weekend.
BW Leaders (4-2, 1-0 OAC)
- Junior guard Laura McCoy (Newton Falls/Garrettsville Garfield) led the team with a career-best 18 points, while also adding two assists
- Junior guard Taylor Bass (Strongsville) also earned a career high with twelve points and tied her career best in rebounds with five
- Academic All-OAC guard/forward Kayla Jones (Grove City) and Women's Yellow Jacket of the Week Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) each added a team-high two steals
- Senior guard Kaycie Badylak (Cincinnati/Archbishop McNicholas) was consistent on offense totaling seven points while shooting 100%
Mount Union Leaders (7-2, 0-1 OAC)
- McKayla Dunkle led the Purple Raiders with 12 points, a block and a steal
- Lily Scott gave a team-high four assists and two steals
- Elizabeth Mason led with twelve rebounds
- Bree McCabe added eleven points
1st Quarter (Tied 13-13)
- McCoy scored the Brown and Gold's first basket of the matchup
- The Yellow Jackets out-rebounded the Purple Raiders 7-5
- BW's defense made its presence felt, totaling three steals in the quarter
2nd Quarter (BW 27-24)
- McCoy led the quarter with four points
- Sophomore forward Maddy Stumpf (Johnstown/Big Walnut) gave out two assists
- The Yellow Jackets outscored the Purple Raiders 14-11 to take the lead going into halftime
3rd Quarter (BW 43-32)
- The Yellow Jackets went on an 8-0 run during the final three minutes to gain a double-digit lead going into the final frame
- Sophomore forward Delaney Garcia (Lakewood) added a layup and two assists
- Senior guard Leah Riley (Cincinnati/Sycamore) went 2-2 from the free throw line
4th Quarter (BW 54-52)
- The Yellow Jackets were held scoreless for almost four minutes before a McCoy layup jumpstarted the offense
- Two made free throws from Miller sealed the win for the Brown and Gold
