BEREA, Ohio - The No. 17 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace women's basketball team earned a win against Case Western Reserve University by a score of 76-52 inside Ursprung Gymnasium.
Four Yellow Jackets scored double-digit points in a decisive victory. BW's depth and rebounding shined today as they scored 35 bench points and out-rebounded the Spartans 45-28. Senior guard
Leah Riley (Cincinnati/Sycamore) was named the BW Holiday Classic Most Valuable Player for her 30-point tournament while leading the Jackets in scoring both days. Senior forward
Brooke Thompson (Maineville/Little Miami) and senior guard/forward
Kayla Jones (Grove City) were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
BW Leaders (8-2)
- Riley led BW in points and assists with 18 and four
- Thompson added 10 points and tied for the team lead in rebounds with nine
- Jones also scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while leading the team with two steals
- Junior guard Laura McCoy (Newton Falls/Garrettsville Garfield) dropped 10 points
- Senior guard Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) recorded two blocks
Case Western Reserve Leaders (6-3)
- Senior guard Emily Plachta recorded 16 points
- Junior guard Mya Hartjes scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds
- Junior guard Jordyn Call dished out three assists
- Junior forward Maura Schorr grabbed six rebounds
1st Quarter (BW 20-18)
- Jones scored the first points of the game with a layup
- The Spartans went on an 11-0 run early in the quarter to put them up by eight
- Riley responded by scoring ten straight points in the next 2:07 on perfect shooting from the field
2nd Quarter (BW 38-32)
- Case Western opened the half on a 9-2 run
- BW chipped away at the Spartan lead and a three-pointer from junior guard Ava Wilkerson (West Mansfield / Marysville) put them up by three
- The Brown and Gold shot an efficient 4-12 from beyond the arc in the first half
3rd Quarter (BW 58-43)
- The Yellow Jackets began the quarter on a 12-3 run, making four of their five field goals
- The Spartans went on a 6-0 run at 4:45 to cut into the Yellow Jacket lead
- Thompson banked in a layup at the buzzer to extend the Brown and Gold lead to 15
4th Quarter (BW 76-52)
- Junior guard Taylor Bass (Strongsville/Strongsville) hit a three-pointer to increase the Yellow Jacket lead to 22 points
- BW closed out the game on an 8-0 run
- Sophomore forward Delaney Garcia (Lakewood/Lakewood) scored four points in the paint
