Men’s Tennis Falls to Messiah (Pa.) in Spring Break Opener

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – After having its first three matches rained out, the Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team finally opened its spring break trip as it fell to Messiah (Pa.) University by a final score of 4-3 at the Hilton Head High School Tennis Courts.

BW (8-1) won two doubles matches and two singles matches.  Messiah (1-3) won one doubles match and four singles matches.  This season, the NCAA Division III tennis has adopted a new policy as doubles matches now account for one team point and not three points like in previous years.
Doubles
  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC Matt McGee (Ottawa Hills) and junior Academic All-OAC Henry Harders (Ottawa Hills) fell at first doubles by a score 6-2
  • Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC Will Horvath (Oregon/Clay) and freshman Tyler Fenton (Williamstown, W. Va.) won  at second doubles by a score of 6-3
  • Junior Jacob Weingart (Tiffin/Columbian) and freshman Vinny Cannata (Aurora) won at third doubles by a score of 7-5
Singles
  • McGee fell at first singles by scores of 4-6, 6-4 and 10-6
  • Horvath fell at second singles by scores of 7-5, 3-6 and 10-7
  • Cannata fell at third singles by scores of 4-6, 6-3 and 10-8
  • Harders won at fourth singles by scores of 6-0, 2-6, 10-8
  • Freshman Will Westberry (Niles, Mich./St. Joseph's {Ind.}) won at fifth singles by scores of 6-2, 3-6 and 10-6
  • Junior Academic All-OAC Joe Donnelly (Lodi/Cloverleaf) fell at sixth singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-4
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, March 12 when they open play at Spring Break Tennis with a rescheduled non-conference match against Salve Regina (R.I.) University at the Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club at 8:00 a.m.  as well as continue play at the Spring Tennis Fest with a non-conference match with Mount St. Mary (N.Y.) College on the Cordillo Courts at 12 p.m.
