No. 7 Women's Basketball Dances to Sweet 16 With Tournament Win Over No. 19 Washington & Lee (Va.)

BEREA, Ohio - The No. 7 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated No. 19 nationally ranked Washington & Lee (Va.) University in the NCAA Division III Tournament Second Round to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive season by a final score of 75-71 in Usprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (28-1) advances to the Sweet 16 for their second straight season and for the fourth time in six years where they will play No. 16 nationally ranked Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday, March 14. Washington & Lee (25-5) ends their season.

BW Leaders

  • Senior All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) led the Brown and Gold with 20 points shooting 3-of-5 from three and tallying three assists
  • Senior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) posted a double-double 13 points and 17 rebounds as she shot 6-of-11 from the field
  • Sophomore guard Laura McCoy (Newton Falls/Garrettsville Garfield) scored 12 points and added three rebounds and two assists
  • Senior All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) and sophomore guard Ava Wilkerson (West Mansfield/Marysville) each scored 11 points
Washington & Lee Leaders
  • Junior forward Mary Schleusner finished the season with another double-double of 30 points and 17 rebounds
  • Junior guard Icy Keneah scored 10 points for the Generals and grabbed three rebounds
  • Junior guard Quinn McGuinness finished with a statline of eight points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals
1st Quarter (W&L 21-25)
  • The Generals ran the floor and got out to an early 14-3 lead
  • Irwin got the BW offense going with eight points while junior Academic All-OAC guard/forward Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) owned the glass with five rebounds
2nd Quarter (W&L 34-29)
  • The Generals got out to a 9-3 start but BW was able to go on a 11-4 run to close the quarter
  • Vaillant recorded seven of the team's 14 boards in the quarter
3rd Quarter (BW 55-45)
  • The Yellow Jackets shot 68.8% from the field while Washington & Lee shot under 30%
  • A pair of Irwin free-throws tied the game and a deep Wilkerson three gave the Jackets the lead for good
4th Quarter (BW 75-71)
  • Washington & Lee outscored the Brown and Gold 26-20 down the stretch but the BW defense was able to win the turnover battle by a 4-2 margin
