No. 8 Women's Basketball Clinches Share of OAC Regular Season Title over Ohio Northern

BEREA, Ohio - The No. 8 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace women's basketball team continued their winning streak as they defeated Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Ohio Northern University by a final score of 62-52 inside the Ursprung Gymnasium. 

The Yellow Jackets knew coming into this game that with a win, they would claim a share of the OAC regular season championship. The effort and intensity throughout the game earned them this win. The Yellow Jackets were making the extra plays on both ends of the floor, and their efforts resulted in the clinching victory. 

BW Leaders (21-2, 14-0 OAC) 
  • Junior guard Ava Wilkerson (West Mansfield / Marysville) scored a team-high 18 points, grabbed two rebounds, and was excellent on defense the entire game 
  • Junior guard Laura McCoy (Newtown Falls /Garrettsville Garfield) tallied 12 points, grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, dished out one assist, and recorded two a game-high two steals 
  • Senior Academic All-OAC forward Brooke Thompson (Maineville/Little Miami) added eight points, five rebounds, and blocked two shots 
  • Senior guard Leah Riley (Cincinnati/Sycamore) had seven points, six rebounds, and two assists 

Ohio Northern Leaders (8-14, 7-6 OAC) 
  • Sophomore guard Emerson Grey tallied a game-high 25 points, to go along with four rebounds, and one steal 
  • Sophomore guard Charlotte Pauling had 13 points, seven rebounds, and two steals 

1st Quarter (BW 11-10) 
  • Grey opened up the scoring in the opening minute for the Polar Bears with a layup 
  • Thompson and Riley combined to go on a 7-0 run for BW to make the score 7-2 at the 6:20 mark 
  • ONU responded with their own 7-2 run to tie the game, 9-9, at the 4:17 mark  
  • The Brown and Gold out-rebounded Ohio Northern on the glass 9-8 
  • Both teams each connected on one three-pointer 

2nd Quarter (BW 31-28) 
  • Once again, Grey opened up the scoring in the opening minute with a layup, except this time she followed it up with five more points for her own personal 7-0 run to put the Polar Bears up 17-11 at the 8:00 mark 
  • Wilkerson nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at 19, with 6:12 remaining 
  • A critical three-pointer by senior guard Kaycie Badylak (Cincinnati/Archbishop McNicholas) capped off a 10-2 BW run, making the score 29-26 at the 1:16 mark 
  • The Yellow and Gold connected on four three-point attempts compared to two by ONU 
  • Ohio Northern out-rebounded BW on the glass 7-5 

3rd Quarter (BW 42-39) 
  • McCoy kicked off the scoring with a shot behind the arc during the opening possession 
  • ONU responded with a 7-0 run, making the score 35-34 at the 8:13 mark 
  • Back and forth both teams went during the final few minutes, but BW was able to take a lead going into the final quarter 
  • McCoy led BW scorers with five points 
  • Ohio Northern out-rebounded BW on the glass 11-10 
  • Both teams each connected on one three-pointer 

4th Quarter (BW 62-52) 
  • McCoy got the party started with an energetic and-one in the opening minutes of action 
  • Grey willed her team back into it with 10 points in the quarter, but ONU never saw a deficit smaller than four after the McCoy opening bucket 
  • BW was able to make 12 of their 13 free attempts to seal the deal down the stretch 
  • BW out-rebounded Ohio Northern on the glass 11-8
  • The Yellow Jackets were able to force four turnovers, which resulted in four points from them
