Baseball Knocks Off Allegheny (Pa.) in Home Opener

BEREA, Ohio -- It might have taken an extra day for the Baldwin Wallace University baseball team to play its home opener, but it was worth the wait as BW defeated Allegheny (Pa.) College in a non-conference game by a final score of 13-7 on Fisher Field.
BW (10-3) scored 13 runs on 12 hits as it plated four runs in the first inning, three in the second, two in the third, one in the sixth and seventh innings and two in the eighth.   Allegheny (8-6) scored seven runs on nine hits as it pushed two runs across the plate in the first inning, three in the fourth and one in the sixth and eighth innings.

Scoring Summary
  • Top 1st – The Gators took the early 2-0 lead
  • Bottom 1st – Junior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference second baseman Carson Petrecca (Willowick, Oh. /Eastlake North) hit a grand slam to right center to give the Yellow Jackets the 4-2 advantage
  • Bottom 2nd – Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference center fielder Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider  (Grove City) doubled to center field and eventually score on a wild pitch to extend the BW lead to 7-2.
  • Bottom 3rd -Sophomore left fielder Mario Escano (Broadview Heights/North Royalton) hit a no doubt homerun to left field and senior All-OAC third baseman Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) had an RBI double to push the Yellow Jacket advantage to 9-2.
  • Top-4th – Allegheny scored three times to cut the lead down to 9-5.
  • Top 6th – The Gators tacked on another run to make deficit 9-6.
  • Bottom 6th – Ritlinger-Nirider scored on the RBI walk by Petrecca to extend the lead to 10-6
  • Bottom 7th – Kolenich scored on the RBI single by junior first baseman Ryan Gordon (Strongsville) to push the lead to 11-6
  • Top 8th – Allegheny scored its final run of the game and cut the lead down to 11-7
  • Bottom 8th - Escano scored on a throwing error and Kolenich tripled to right center to score sophomore catcher Owen Brazee (Bedford, Mass./Lawrence Academy)
At the Plate
  • Kolenich went 3-for-4 with double, triple, three runs scored, two RBIs, one walk and one stolen base
  • Escano went 3-for-5 with a double, homerun, two runs scored, one RBI and stolen base
  • Ritlinger-Nirider went 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, two RBIs and two walks and a stolen base
  • Gordon went 2-for-5 with an RBI and stolen base
  • Two other BW hitters had a base knock highlighted by the grand slam from Petrecca
On the Mound
  • Senior right hander Ian Anderson (Broadview Heights/Trinity) earned the win as he allowed five runs on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 3.1 innings pitched
  • Senior lefty Nolan Kellicker (Dover) pitched 2.2 innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits with two strikeouts
  • Sophomore right hander Brady Richman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Heritage) pitched the final three innings to earn the save as he allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk

The Yellow Jackets travel to Wilmington to open OAC play with a doubleheader against Wilmington College on Tewksbury-Delaney Field at 1 p.m.
