WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team traveled to Wilmington to face off against the Wilmington College Quakers in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets (12-3, 2-0) won the first game thanks to an impressive offensive showing. The Quakers (0-13, 0-2) proved a tougher opponent in the second game, but BW was able to get the win, sweeping both games of the doubleheader and starting off conference play with two wins.
Game One (BW 18-0, 8 Innings)
Scoring Summary
Top 1st – Junior first-baseman Ryan Gordon (Strongsville) singled to bring home the opening run of the game
Top 1st – Sophomore right-fielder Maddox Tarquinio (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) hit a sacrifice groundout to bring home a run and extend BW's lead to two
Top 2nd – Senior third-baseman Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) singled home another Yellow Jacket run
Top 2nd – A two-run single by senior center-fielder Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider (Grove City) saw the score go to 5-0 in BW's favor
Top 4th – Junior designated hitter Colin West (Westborough, Mass./Worcester Academy) started the scoring for BW in the fourth inning with a two-run double
Top 4th – Gordon extended BW's lead to 9-0 with a two-run single
Top 4th – Junior second-baseman Carson Petrecca (Willowick/Eastlake North) added another two runs with an RBI double
Top 4th – Petrecca was singled home by sophomore left-fielder Mario Escano (Broadview Heights/North Royalton) to increase the BW lead to 12-0
Top 4th – Junior catcher Mason Fixx (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) hit a sacrifice groundout to score Escano and conclude an eight-run 4th inning, and extend the Yellow Jacket lead to 13 runs
Top 6th – Fixx doubled home two runs to up the score to 15-0
Top 6th – Senior shortstop Matt Terzola (Uniontown/Archbishop Hoban) singled home Fixx for BW's sixteenth run
Top 7th – Sophomore first-baseman Matt DelDuca (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) hit a two-run home run to make it an 18-0 Brown and Gold lead, which became the final two runs of game one
At the Plate
- Escano, Fixx, Gordon, and Kolenich each led the Yellow Jackets with two hits
- Fixx and Gordon each had three RBI
- DelDuca hit the only home run of the game
On the Mound
- Senior left-hander Brit Kostura (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Christian School) was credited with the win with six scoreless innings, seven strikeouts, and 84 pitches thrown
- Freshman left-hander Michael Falls (Lancaster, N.Y.) pitched one scoreless inning of relief
Game Two (BW 6-4)
Scoring Summary
Top 5th – Ritlinger-Nirider brought home an RBI on a groundout to open the scoring and give BW a 1-0 lead
Top 6th – Sophomore catcher Yuri Bellina (Medina/Padua Franciscan) hit a two-run double as a pinch hitter to extend BW's lead to three
Top 8th – Petrecca and senior left-fielder Nolan Kellicker (Dover) scored on an error by the Quakers to bring the score to 5-1
Top 9th – Petrecca singled home BW's sixth run, which was their final run of the game, and of the doubleheader as well
At the Plate
- Gordon went 2-for-4 with a double
- Bellina led BW with two RBI and went 1-for-1 from the plate with a double
- Petrecca and Ritlinger-Nirider each added an RBI with one hit
On the Mound
- Senior right-hander Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) pitched 8 ? innings with 10 strikeouts, allowed 11 hits, and was credited with the win
- Junior right-hander Will Henderlich (Madison) got the save by pitching ? innings of relief with a strikeout
