No. 25 Baseball Sweeps Capital in Doubleheader

BEREA, Ohio – The 25th nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Capital University in an Ohio Athletic Conference double-header by scores of 15-3 and 19-10 on the turf of Fisher Field. BW won both games thanks to an impressive offensive display, scoring 34 runs on the day. This improves the Yellow Jacket streak of at least 15 runs in a game to four games.

Game 1 (BW 15-3)

Scoring Summary

  • Bottom 2nd – After giving up the first run of the game, senior left-fielder John Panstares (Westlake/St. Ignatius) hit an RBI double to make the game tied at one

  • Bottom 4th - Sophomore right-fielder Maddox Tarquinio (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) brought home BW's second run of the game with an RBI double

  • Bottom 4th – The score was level at three after Panstares singled home another run for his second RBI of the game

  • Bottom 4th – Tarquinio scored after junior catcher Mason Fixx (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) hit a sacrifice groundout

  • Bottom 4th - Senior third-baseman Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) doubled home BW's fifth run

  • Bottom 4th – A single by senior center-fielder Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider (Grove City) brought home another Yellow Jacket run

  • Bottom 4th – BW ended a six-run fourth inning with Kolenich scoring on a fielder's choice hit by junior designated-hitter Colin West (Westborough, Mass./Worcester Academy) to bring the score to 7-3

  • Bottom 5th – An RBI single by Fixx and an error by Capital's left fielder saw two more Yellow Jacket runs cross the plate

  • Bottom 5th – Kolenich doubled home Fixx for BW's tenth run of the game

  • Bottom 5th – A three-run shot by West increased the score to 13-3 in favor of the Brown and Gold

  • Bottom 7th - Junior first-baseman Ryan Gordon (Strongsville) hit a two-run home run to bring home runs 14 and 15 for the Brown and Gold

At the Plate

  • Panstares went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a double, and two walks

  • Kolenich went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and additionally added a walk

  • West led BW with four RBI on 1-for-4 hitting and hit his second home run of the season

On the Mound

  • Senior left-hander Brit Kostura (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Christian School) pitched six innings, allowed two runs, and struck out six batters. He was credited with the win

  • Freshman left-hander Micheal Falls (Lancaster, N.Y.) pitched three scoreless innings of relief, striking out six on 43 pitches and was credited with the save

Game 2 (BW 19-10)

Scoring Summary

  • Bottom 1st – Gordon opened the scoring for the game with an RBI single

  • Bottom 2nd – BW's second run came on a double play where Tarquinio came home to score

  • Bottom 3rd – Tarquinio singled home the Brown and Gold's third run to give BW a 3-1 lead

  • Bottom 3rd – West scored when sophomore catcher Owen Brazee (Bedford, Mass./Lawrence Academy) worked a bases-loaded walk

  • Bottom 3rd – Senior shortstop Matt Terzola (Uniontown/Archbishop Hoban) hit an RBI single to increase the Yellow Jacket lead to four

  • Bottom 3rd – Kolenich hit a two-run single to give BW a 7-1 lead

  • Bottom 5th – Kolenich hit another two-run single to put BW up 8-7

  • Bottom 5th – Ritlinger-Nirider homered to bring home three more Yellow Jacket runs

  • Bottom 6th – A sacrifice fly by Kolenich brought home BW's 12th run of the game

  • Bottom 6th – Brazee scored on a wild pitch

  • Bottom 6th - Ritlinger-Nirider singled home a run to give the Yellow Jackets a 15-9 lead

  • Bottom 8th - Ritlinger-Nirider added another RBI single and brought home BW's 16th run of the game

  • Bottom 8th – West added an RBI on a sacrifice fly to bring home run number 17 for the Brown and Gold

  • Bottom 8th – Junior second-baseman Jace Druschel (Tampa, Fla./George Steinbrenner) hit an RBI single to make it 18-8

  • Bottom 8th – A pitch that hit Tarquinio brought in Ritlinger-Nirider for BW's 19th and final run of the game

At the Plate

  • Ritlinger-Nirider went 4-for-6 with five RBI and hit a home run

  • Kolenich went 3-for-5 and added five RBI

  • West was 3-for-4 with one RBI and two doubles

  • Panstares added three runs on 3-for-5 hitting

  • Tarquinio finished the second game going 2-for-4 with a walk

  • Brazee was 2-for-4 and walked twice

  • Terzola went 2-for-4 and had an RBI and a walk each as BW had seven players get multiple hits

On the Mound

  • Sophomore left-hander Tyler Vogel (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) was credited with the win with 2 ? innings pitched, no runs allowed, and two strikeouts

  • Junior right-hander Will Henderlich (Madison) pitched two innings, gave up one run, and struck out two

The Yellow Jackets travel to Kent, Ohio, to take on Kent State University at Olga Mural Field in Schoonover Stadium on Tuesday, March 31st with first pitch being set for 6 p.m.
