From Quarterback to Coach: Mental ‘07 Comes Home to Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio – Baldwin Wallace University Head Football Coach Jim Hilvert has added a familiar name to his 2026 staff, announcing the return of former quarterback Mickey Mental '07 as an assistant coach.

"I'm thrilled to have Mickey join the BW football staff", stated Hilvert. "His experience, knowledge of the game, and ability to recruit will make an immediate impact. It's always special to welcome a former player back home, and I know this opportunity means a great deal to him."

Mental, who will coach the quarterbacks and serve as passing game coordinator, returns to Berea after serving as the head coach and offensive coordinator at NCAA Division I Weber State (Utah) University from 2023-25.  He also served as the offensive coordinator during the 2022 season.  Mental mentored 17 All-Big Sky Conference student-athletes, including five to first team honorees, and seven All-American honorees.

"I am excited to return to BW and work alongside such an outstanding staff and team," commented Mental.  "BW is a truly special place for me and my family, and I cannot wait to get back to work and contribute to the continued success of the program."

Prior to Weber State, he had his first head coaching position at NCAA Division II Notre Dame College from 2019-2022.  Mental spent 13 total years at Notre Dame in a variety of coaching roles, including five seasons as the offensive coordinator.  As head coach, he posted an overall record of 16-2. In the spring shortened 2021 season, Mental guided the team to a 5-0 record and the Mountain East Conference (MEC) regular season title.  The following fall, he led the team to an 11-2 record and a trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs second round.

While at BW, Mental earned a Bachelor of Arts in business administration.  He was a four-year quarter back, including a three year starter and a team captain as a senior.

Mental, who is a native of nearby Olmsted Falls, and his wife Jessica have one child.
