BW Baseball Team Drops Two Games to Start Season

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio  -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team opened its 2014 season by losing a pair of games to host and NAIA Shawnee State University and to NAIA Concordia (Mich.) University at the Branch Rickey Park.

Baldwin Wallace (0-2) lost their season-opener to Shawnee State (5-6) by a final score of 9-0 in seven innings and were then defeated by Concordia (1-9) by a final score of 5-4 in seven inings.

Against Shawnee State, the Yellow Jacket offense was limited to just three hits and two walks.  Junior left fielder Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) and sophomores Mark Zimmerman (Akron/Green) and John Taylor (Stow/Hudson) each had one hit.   Junior shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark) and junior right fielder Alex Green (Pickerington/North) represented the other BW base runners as both had a base on balls.  Four Baldwin Wallace pitchers allowed nine Bear runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and six walks.

In the game against Concordia, the Yellow Jackets scored four runs on 11 hits and one walk.  Gugliotta and Zimmerman each had three hits on four at-bats, while Murphy had one hit and two runs on two at-bats.  Junior Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) and sophomore Jerry Scholle (Hinckley/Medina Highland) also each drove in one run.  Two Baldwin Wallace pitchers allowed five Cardinals runs.

BW returns to action next weekend, Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2 when they travel to Transylvania University to play a three-game series.  The team will then travel to Dayton to face NCAA Division I Dayton University on Wednesday, March 5 at 2 p.m.
