BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team defeated NCAA Division II Ursuline College, 21-10, on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium. It was the second of four straight home games for the Yellow Jackets (2-2).
BW was led on offense by sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference players
Katie Kocher (Rocky River) and
Maddie Russell (Rocky River), and seniors
Cara Wood (Shaker Heights/ Laurel) and
Victoria Budzyn (East Aurora, N.Y./ East Aurora). Kocher had three goals and three assists.
Russell had three goals and two assists.
Wood and
Bodkin each had four goals.
In goal, BW sophomore transfer goalkeeper
Amanda Getto (Medina) faced 25 total Arrow shots, including 20 shots on-goal, allowed 10 goals and made 10 saves.
The visiting Arrows (0-4) were led by sophomore attack Maddie Kipp with three goals..
In the first half, BW grabbed a 4-0 lead at the 22:53 mark on goals by
Budzyn,
Bodkin,
Wood and
Kocher, but Ursuline came back and scored the next four goals to tie it at 4-4 at 12:10. The Jackets scored the next six goals, including two each by
Wood and
Russell, to take a commanding, 10-4 lead at 3:18. After another Ursuline goal at 2:03 closed its deficit to 10-5,
Kocher and
Russell scored again to give BW a 12-5 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Ursuline closed it defibit to 12-7 at 28:47 with two quick goals, but BW responded with five of the next seven goals, including three more by
Budzyn to take a 17-8 lead at 11:19 left. BW also scored four of the final six goals to clinch its second win of the season.
Overall, BW outshot Ursuline, 40-25, including a 34-20 advantage in shots on-goal. The Jackets also had a 27-17 lead in ground balls and caused 19 turnovers.
The Yellow Jackets remain at home to face NCAA Division II Walsh University on Tuesday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. and then host Calvin (Mich.) College on March 28 at 1 p.m. The first Ohio Athletic Conference contest is on Friday, April 3 at Wilmington College at 1 p.m.
