BEREA, Ohio – The No. 18 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Oberlin College in the 2024 home opener and a non-conference game by a final score of 63-48 in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
BW Leaders (2-1)
- Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) finished with a game-high 18 points including four three-pointers and added four rebounds and three steals
- Senior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) also scored in double-figures with 13 points and grabbed six boards
- Senior All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) scored nine points and recorded five rebounds
- Junior Academic All-OAC forward Brooke Thompson (Maineville/Little Miami) led the team with seven rebounds
Oberlin Leaders (1-1)
- Junior forward Angela Kumler scored a team-high 10 points
- Junior guard Lily Najmulski led all players in assists with three
- Junior forward Katherine Csiszar and Kumler each tied a game-best seven rebounds
1st Quarter (BW 15-10)
- Two Oberlin free throws gave the Yeomen their final lead of the night as the Yellow Jackets answered with a 10-4 run to close the quarter
- BW's 42.9% from deep trounced Oberlin's ice cold 0-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc
2nd Quarter (BW 36-16)
- The Yellow Jackets outscored the Yeomen 21-6 to take a 14-point lead into the half
- Vaillant scored seven of BW's 14 straight points highlighted by a deep three assisted by junior guard Kaycie Badylak (Cincinnati/Archbishop McNicholas)
3rd Quarter (BW 49-34)
- Oberlin outscored BW 18-13, but baskets by sophomore guards Laura McCoy (Newton Falls/Garrettsville Garfield), Kayla Jones (Grove City), and Taylor Bass (Strongsville) maintained a 15-point Yellow Jacket lead
- Ressler and Thompson each grabbed two of BW's 10 rebounds
4th Quarter (BW 63-48)
- A Ressler three gave BW the 61-37 lead: their largest of the night
- Freshmen Delaney Garcia (Lakewood) and Jessica Wolanin (Olmsted Falls) made their collegiate debut for the Brown and Gold
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, November 20 as they host Trine (Ind.) University in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
