Strong Second Half Leads No. 18 Women's Basketball to First Win Over Saint Vincent (Pa.)

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The No. 18 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Saint Vincent (Pa.) College in the final game of the Hampton Inn by Hilton Women's Basketball Tipoff by a final score of 75-49 in Salvitti Family Gymnasium.

BW (1-1) earns its first victory of the season after exchanging leads with Saint Vincent (0-2) 10 times in the first half. The Yellow Jackets never trailed again, however, as they blew out the Bearcats 43-18 and head back to Berea as the victors. After the game, senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) was named to the Hampton Inn by Hilton Women's Basketball Tipoff All-Tournament Team.

BW Leaders

  • Junior guard Kaycie Badylak (Cincinnati/Archbishop McNicholas) led the offense with 12 points
  • Sophomore guard Kayla Jones (Grove City) and junior Academic All-OAC forward Brooke Thompson (Maineville/Little Miami) each scored seven points
  • Senior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) and Ressler each grabbed eight rebounds
  • Junior Academic All-OAC guard/forward Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) finished with a statline of six points, six rebounds, and a team-high four assists
Saint Vincent Leaders
  • Senior guard/forward Emily Thompson led the team with 13 points and eight rebounds
  • Freshman guard/forward Brooke Evans grabbed six boards and had a game-high five assists

1st Quarter (BW 13-12)

  • Leah Riley (Cincinnati/Sycamore), Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial), and Taylor Bass (Strongsville) each hit a three to outscore Saint Vincent 9-8 in the final minutes of the quarter
  • The Brown and Gold owned the glass with 15 rebounds including six on the offensive side to the Bearcats' one

2nd Quarter (BW 32-31)

  • With BW down by six, Jones went on a 5-2 run against Saint Vincent to make it a three-point game
  • The Bearcats led for nearly seven minutes of the quarter but the Yellow Jackets went into the half with the lead thanks to 50% shooting from the floor 

3rd Quarter (BW 42-34)

  • The Yellow Jackets came out hot as they outscored Saint Vincent 19-3 and never looked back
  • BW also corraled 18 rebounds with Miller grabbing five of her six on the day

4th Quarter (BW 75-49)

  • Freshman guard Grace Heliger (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) drained a three for her first collegiate basket while freshman forward Maddy Stumpf (Johnstown/Big Walnut) tallied three rebounds. Freshmen Sarah Scott (Monaca, Pa./Lincoln Park) and Elise Champagne (Columbia Station/Columbia) also made their collegiate debuts
  • The only Yellow Jacket field goals were from deep as Badylak, Riley, Ava Wilkerson (West Mansfield/Marysville), Alek Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mars Area), and Rylee Bennett (New Franklin/Archbishop Hoban) combined for 8-11 shooting from deep

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, November 12 as they host Oberlin College in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
