Head Coach Cheri Harrer has become the All-Time Winningest Head Basketball Coach, men's and women's, in Ohio Athletic Conference history as the No. 18 nationally ranked women's basketball team defeated Ohio Northern University by a final score of 51-44 in the conference opener inside the ONU Sports Center.
Coach Harrer, in her 35th season, earns her 693rd career victory and passes former Capital University head coach Dixie Jeffers for the most wins by any basketball coach at an OAC institution.
Harrer is currently tied for tenth on the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball All-Time Wins list and is sixth among active coaches.
BW Leaders (5-1, 1-0 OAC)
- Junior guard Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) led the team with a season-high 12 points
- Senior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) finished with seven points and four rebounds
- Sophomore guard Kayla Jones (Grove City) also scored a season-high with nine points
- Senior All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) tallied a game-high 11 rebounds
- Sophomore guard Ava Wilkerson (West Mansfield/Marysville) shot a clutch 3-of-3 from deep for nine points
- Senior All-OAC guard and OAC Player of the Week Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) recorded three assists and added four points
ONU Leaders (3-3, 0-1 OAC)
- Senior forward Brooke Allen scored a game-high 15 points and added six rebounds
- Junior guard Mackenzie Suprano led the team in rebounds with 10
- Senior forward Kristen Luersman finished with 14 points and three assists
1st Quarter (ONU 8-5)
- Luersman scored six of the Polar Bears' eight points
- A deep three from junior guard Leah Riley (Cincinnati/Sycamore) gave a spark to the Brown and Gold offense after a slow start
2nd Quarter (ONU 17-12)
- Another three by Wilkerson made it a one possession game with just over two minutes to play in the half
- BW set up one final possession after forcing an ONU shot-clock violation, but after review, Vaillant's last-second bucket came just after the buzzer
- Ressler grabbed three boards to finish with six in the half
3rd Quarter (ONU 35-34)
- Miller opened the half with a three and followed it up with a layup to make it 15-19
- Wilkerson tied the game with her second three-ball and Jones gave BW its first lead of the night with a pair of free throws
4th Quarter (BW 51-44)
- Jones rattled off five straight points for the Yellow Jackets and added another bucket in the paint to make it a 46-44 ballgame with two minutes to play
- The BW defense locked down the Polar Bears down the stretch and the Yellow Jackets made five of their six free throws in the final minutes to ice the game
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, December 7 as they host an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup and the first game of a women's and men's double header against Otterbein University at 1 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
