No. 18 Women's Basketball Stings Otterbein

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 18 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Otterbein University by a final score of 69-48 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW Leaders (6-1, 2-0 OAC)

  • Junior Academic All-OAC forward Brooke Thompson (Maineville/Little Miami) recorded her first career double-double with a statline of 13 points, 10 rebounds, a block, a steal, and an assist
  • Senior All-OAC guard and OAC Player of the Week Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) and senior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) each scored 10 points with three rebounds
  • Junior guard Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) grabbed seven rebounds and added two points and two assists
  • Sophomore guard Laura McCoy (Newton Falls/Garrettsville Garfield) and senior All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) each added seven points
  • Irwin added a team-high three steals
Otterbein Leaders (2-4, 0-1 OAC)
  • Senior forward Kathleen DeCarlo had a game-high 16 points and a team-high six rebounds
  • Sophomore guard Abby Rawlings assisted four times
  • Senior forward Maizie King tallied four steals

1st Quarter (Otterbein 15-11)

  • McCoy led the Jackets with her seven points including back-to-back buckets and a three to cut the lead to 12-11
  • The Cardinals offense got out to a hot start and shot 3-of-4 from deep 
  • The Brown and Gold outrebounded Otterbein 9-6

2nd Quarter (BW 29-22)

  • Vaillant's strong finish in the post with 6:07 left in the half tied the game at 19
  • The Cardinals regained the lead, but an Irwin layup tied things back up and two free throws from sophomore guard Kayla Jones (Grove City) gave BW the lead for good
  • The Yellow Jackets ended the half with 10 straight points including four from Jones

3rd Quarter (BW 52-32)

  • Irwin drained back-to-back threes to take an 18-point lead and to head into the final quarter 
  • BW shot 55.6% from the floor to trump the Cardinals' ice-cold 27.3%
  • Thompson and Miller combined for seven of the Brown and Gold's 11 boards with four and three, respectively
· 4th Quarter (BW 69-48)
  • Freshman guard Elise Champagne (Columbia Station/Columbia) scored her first collegiate points with a tip-in layup and two free throws
  • Senior forward Sadie Arend (Carey) and junior Academic All-OAC guard Ali Menendez (Hudson) each recorded a steal which led to points in transition for the Jackets
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, December 14 as they travel to New Concord to take on Muskingum University in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup and in the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Performance Court inside the Anne C. Steele Center.
