No. 11 Women's Basketball Holds Off Ohio Northern in Play4Kay Game

BEREA, Ohio - The No. 11 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Northern University in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup and this year's Play4Kay game by a final score of 49-41 in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

Prior to the game, the team dedicated the night to Naismith Hall of Fame Women's Basketball Coach Kay Yow who passed away in 2009 due to breast cancer. The Yellow Jackets donned pink uniforms and raised money for Play4Kay in support of Coach Yow's vision of finding an answer in the fight against cancer.

BW Leaders (17-1, 11-0 OAC) 

  • Junior Academic All-OAC guard Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) led all players with a season-high 15 points and also grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots
  • Senior All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) posted her fourth career double-double with a season-high 12 rebounds and 11 points thanks to 6-of-8 shooting at the charity stripe
  • Sophomore guard Kayla Jones (Grove City) added seven points and two blocks
  • Junior Academic All-OAC forward Brooke Thompson (Maineville/Little Miami) scored five points and recordedfive rebounds
Ohio Northern Leaders (12-6, 8-3 OAC)
  • Junior guard MacKenzie Suprano also finished with a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds
  • Senior guard Abi Akamine led the team in assists with five and added four points
  • Senior forward Brooke Allen contributed nine points for ONU
1st Quarter (Tied 9-9)
  • Miller shot 3-of-5 from the field for seven of the Yellow Jackets' nine points
  • The Brown and Gold got out to a 7-2 lead to start the game, but the Polar Bears quickly went on a 7-2 run of their own to tie things after the first
  • Ressler and Miller each grabbed three boards
2nd Quarter (BW 24-20)
  • Senior All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) and sophomore guard Ava Wilkerson (West Mansfield/Marysville) each scored five points
  • Sophomore guard Maddie Ebbert (Lake Orion, Mich.) got after a loose ball to set up an Irwin go-ahead three with 1:40 left to play
  • ONU took a 17-11 lead in the quarter's first three minutes but BW went on a 13-3 run, including eight straight, to close the half

3rd Quarter (ONU 34-33)

  • Both teams faced a dry spell offensively but were able to make up for it with nine rebounds each
  • Akamine found senior forward Kristen Luersman at the elbow to give the Polar Bears a one-point lead going into the final period
  • The BW defense had four takeaways

4th Quarter (BW 49-41)

  • Jones converted on the and-one to put BW up by six with 6:52 left in regulation
  • Ressler hit the dagger three to give the Jackets their biggest lead of the day
  • The Brown and Gold blocked three shots giving them nine on the night

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, February 1 as they host Muskingum University in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup and the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
