COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 23 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace women's basketball team beat conference opponent Capital University by a score of 74-64 at the Performance Arena.
All 11 Yellow Jackets who entered the game scored at least two points in a hard-fought team win. The lead changed ten times, but the Brown and Gold took the lead late in the third quarter and never looked back.
BW Leaders (8-2, 4-0 OAC)
- Junior guard Laura McCoy (Newton Falls/Garrettsville Garfield) paced the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 13 points and collected six rebounds
- Women's Yellow Jacket of the Week Brooke Thompson (Maineville/Little Miami) added 12 points, four rebounds, and three steals
- Senior forward Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) dealt out a team-high three assists
Capital Leaders (8-3, 2-2 OAC)
- Senior forward Samaree Perkins recorded a double-double with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds
- Junior guard Kendall Spreen scored 17 points
- Junior forward Tahirah Ellis had a team-high four assists to go along with 15 points
1st Quarter (Capital 19-14)
- Thompson kicked off the scoring with a layup in the paint
- The Comets ripped off a 9-0 run early on to give them a 10-point lead
- The Yellow Jackets countered with an 8-0 run, cutting the deficit to two points
- Spreen hit a three-pointer at the end of the half to put the Comets up by five
- Thompson led the Brown and Gold with six points
2nd Quarter (BW 29-27)
- BW began the half on a 7-0 run and a three-pointer from senior guard Kaycie Badylak (Cincinnati/Archbishop Nichols) gave BW a 21-19 lead
- Capital responded with a 5-1 run to put them up by one
- Sophomore forward Delaney Garcia (Lakewood) capped off her team-leading six-point quarter with an and-one layup in the paint at 1:47
- The Yellow Jackets scored 24 of their 29 first-half points in the paint
3rd Quarter (BW 54-51)
- Senior guard Leah Riley (Cincinnati/Sycamore) ended a 9-0 Comet run with a three-pointer at 5:02, knotting the game at 40
- The lead shifted four times in the next 1:24, capped off by a layup by sophomore forward Maddy Stumpf (Johnstown/Big Walnut) which gave BW a one-point lead
- Junior guard Ava Wilkerson (West Mansfield/Marysville) knocked down a contested floater as time expired, which expanded the Yellow Jacket lead to three
4th Quarter (BW 74-64)
- An 8-0 BW run from 4:53 to 2:57 bolstered their lead to 11 points
- Capital managed to cut the lead to six at 2:19
- Free throws from Thompson, McCoy, and Wilkerson iced the game in the final seconds
