BEREA, Ohio - The No. 10 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team clinched the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title as they defeated crosstown rival John Carroll University in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup by a final score of 66-61 in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
BW (21-1, 15-0 OAC) clinched a share of their 12th OAC regular season title with their win over John Carroll (16-7, 10-5 OAC) in the last ever regular-season conference matchup between the two teams. With Capital University falling just minutes later to Marietta College, the Yellow Jackets secured sole possession of the regular season crown for the eighth time in program history and for the second straight year.
BW Leaders
- Junior Academic All-OAC guard/forward Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) had a career-high five blocks, tied a team-high seven rebounds, and scored five points
- Senior All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) makes it three straight games scoring in double figures and six of her last seven after scoring 11 points and adding six rebounds, three assists, and two steals
- Sophomore guard Laura McCoy (Newton Falls/Garrettsville Garfield) tied a team-high 11 points shooting 5-of-6 from the floor and recorded two steals
- Senior All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) was the third Jacket in double-figures with 10 points and added two rebounds, two assists, and two steals
- Senior forward Sadie Arend (Carey) went 4-for-4 from the floor for eight points
- Senior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) finished with seven points and seven rebounds
John Carroll Leaders
- Junior guard/forward Ava Ryncarz finished with a double-double of a game-high 27 points and a game-high 11 rebounds
- Junior forward Kaylie McKenney added 11 points, seven rebounds, and a team-high three assists
- Junior guard Graci Semptimphelter recorded nine points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block
1st Quarter (JCU 19-13)
- Thompson scored four points and Vaillant recorded four rebounds
- The Blue Streaks rattled off nine straight to take a 19-9 lead but BW closed the gap to six points to end the period
- Miller tallied two of the team's three blocks
2nd Quarter (BW 28-26)
- Vaillant's put-back layup gave the Jackets their first lead since the first possession of the game and highlighted an eight-point run to close the half
- The Brown and Gold defense locked down JCU allowing only two field goals
- Thompson had five of BW's 15 rebounds
3rd Quarter (BW 50-47)
- The quarter became a shootout as each team scored nine baskets including three threes
- Arend scored six of her eight points on the night
- Ressler drilled a three to beat the buzzer and to send the home crowd into a frenzy
4th Quarter (BW 66-61)
- Sophomore guard Ava Wilkerson (West Mansfield/Marysville) grabbed four boards and tallied her team-best third assist
- Vaillant drew the clutch and-one to give BW a three-point lead with just under two minutes to play
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Satuday, February 15 as they host Seniors' Day and an an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup against Wilmington College in the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
