Softball Sweeps Wilmington in OAC Opener

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept its Ohio Athletic Conference opener against Wilmington College on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex.

BW (9-1, 2-0 OAC) won the first game by a final score of 14-6 in five innings and took the nightcap by a final score of 7-3.

In game one, BW scored a season-high 14 runs on a season-best 15 hits as it plated two runs in the first, exploded for nine runs in the third and added three runs in the fourth.   Wilmington scored six runs on seven hits as it pushed two runs across the plate in the first, one in the third and fourth and two in the fifth.

At the Plate
  • Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) went 3-4 with two runs scored and a run batted-in (RBI)
  • Sophomore third baseman Mia Maddamma (North Royalton) went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored
  • Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI
  • Freshman left fielder Sam Peterkoski (Berea/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored RBI and stolen base
  • Six other Yellow Jackets had a base knock highlighted by a double and two RBIs from senior All-OAC catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) and a double from senior Academic All-OAC center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermillion/Firelands)
  • Junior pinch hitter Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) and sophomore pinch hitter Lexie Valliant (Bowling Green/Perrysburg) each had an RBI
In the Circle
  • Senior All-OAC right hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) won her fifth game of the season as she allowed six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk
In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored seven runs on 12 hits as they plated one run in the third, five in the fourth and one in the fifth.   The Quakers scored three runs on eight hits as it pushed two runs across the plate in the second and one in the fourth.

At the Plate
  • Peterkoski went 3-for-3 with a career-high two doubles, two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base
  • Maddamma went 2-for-3 with a run scored
  • Junior All-OAC designated hitter/pitcher Maddie Lester (Boardman) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs
In the Circle
  • Junior righty Katie Barnhart (North Ridgeville) got the start and no decision as she allowed three runs on five hits with a strikeout and walk in 3.1 innings pitched
  • Lester picked up her second win of the season as she did not allow a run on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks in the final 3.2 innings
BW is back in action on Tuesday, April 1 when it hosts a rescheduled non-conference doubleheader against Alma (Mich.) College at 3 p.m.
