Women’s Volleyball Wrapped Up Opening Weekend at Cedar Point

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's volleyball team concluded their opening weekend at the Great Lakes Crossover by earning their first win while also dropping two matches in five sets each.

The Yellow Jackets (1-2) opened the season with a back-and-forth five-set loss to Franciscan University with set scores of 22-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, and 12-15. Coach Kate Latkovic's squad then bounced back by earning a 3-1 victory over Concordia-Chicago (25-23, 18-25, 25-16, 25-22) which evened their season record. BW closed the weekend with another back-and-forth match against Allegheny that resulted in a loss to end the tournament (25-27, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 10-15).

vs. Franciscan (1-2)
  • Junior Lexi Smith (Tiffin / Columbian) led the team in kills with 15 while playing all five sets.
  • Setter Katarina Blazetic (DeLand, Fla. / DeLand) tallied 44 assists and seven service aces to lead the team in both categories.
  • Veteran libero/defensive specialist Paige Contris (Pemberville / Eastwood) led the team in digs with 20 while playing all five sets.
  • First-year defensive specialist Morgan Kaylor (Galloway / Hilliard Bradley) recorded her first career aces with four in her debut match.
  • Sophomore middle hitter India Woodson (Oakwood Village / Bedford) made five blocks to lead the team in blocks.

vs. Concordia-Chicago (1-2)
  • Blazetic showed her consistency by leading the team in both assists (36) and aces (four) as she did in the first match.
  • Contris maintained her momentum by recording 21 digs to help the Jackets to their first victory.
  • Senior outside hitter Ella Rogers (Painesville / Mentor) earned eight kills while playing in all four sets to boost the Jackets to a win.
  • Woodson tallied three blocks, which means she led the team in that category in two straight matches.

vs. Allegheny (2-2)
  • First-year middle hitter Grace Keane (Cleveland / St. Joseph Academy) supported the Yellow Jackets with a team-leading 17 kills through her first full collegiate match.
  • Contris contributed a career-high 30 digs to lead the team against Allegheny.
  • Blazetic led the team in assists yet again with 40 while also getting 16 digs.
  • Woodson continued her blocking ways by leading her squad for the third time this weekend with four blocks.

  • Women's volleyball will make their home debut on Friday, September 5 at 5:00 p.m. against familiar foe John Carroll to begin the two-day Marcia French Invitational.
