Men's Basketball Drops Home Finale to Heidelberg

BEREA, Ohio
– The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team fought hard but fell to the Heidelberg University Student Princes in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup by a score of 89-81 inside the Ursprung Gymnasium to conclude the home portion of the regular season schedule. 

Heidelberg came out of the gates hot, jumping to a double-digit lead early. The Yellow Jackets, while putting up good shooting numbers, were outdone by the outstanding first half scoring display the Student Princes put up, who led at halftime 54-39.  An exciting second half saw BW cut the lead down to 6 points with 1:32 left, but they ultimately could not finish the job.  

BW Leaders (7-17, 4-11 OAC) 

  • Freshman guard Josh Byers (Strongsville) led the team in scoring with 17 points 

  • Junior guard Titus Baskerville IV (Stow) led the team in rebounds with seven and provided six assists 

  • Junior forward AJ Pestello (Cuyahoga Falls) had a good game with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and one block  

Heidelberg Leaders (13-11, 7-8 OAC)

  • Junior guard Jarveil Gainey led the Student Princes in scoring with 23 points and rebounds with nine 

  • Senior guard Marcos Vazquez had 18 points and a team-high six assists 

First Half (Heidelberg 54-39) 

  • Heidelberg opened the game on a 14-2 run 

  • Byers led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with eight points 

  • Gainey led Heidelberg in points with 20 

  • The Student Princes shot exceptionally well from the field at 71.4% and 61.5% from beyond-the-arc while BW shot 48.3% and 37.5%, respectively 

  • Heidelberg made eight three-pointers compared to the Yellow Jackets' six 

  • The Student Princes outrebounded the Brown and Gold, 15-6 

Second Half (Heidelberg 89-81) 

  • BW outscored Heidelberg 42-35 

  • Freshmen guard Byers again led the Brown and Gold in scoring with nine points in the second half 

  • Junior guard Baskerville IV accumulated four out of his five assists in the second half 

  • 20 of the Student Princes points came at the free throw line 

  • The Yellow Jackets scored 16 field goals compared to Heidelberg's seven

  • Heidelberg cooled off, shooting only 10 % from beyond the arc compared to BW's 31.6%
