Softball Picks Up Second Straight Home Sweep, Takes Two from Olivet (Mich.)

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team earned its second home doubleheader sweep as it defeated The University of Olivet (Mich.) in a non-conference doubleheader on the BW Softball Field inside the Roehm Athletic Complex.

In game one, BW (9-5) scored 11 runs on 11 hits as it plated one run in the first inning, two in the second, one in the third and seven in the fourth.   Olivet (2-14) scored two runs on three hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the fourth and fifth innings.

At the Plate
  • Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference left fielder Sam Peterkoski (Berea/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, run batted-in and walk
  • Junior first baseman Lexie Vaillant (Bowling Green/Perrysburg) went 2-for-3 with a career-high two doubles, career-best three runs scored and one RBI
  • Seven other Yellow Jacket hitters had a base knock highlighted by doubles from senior designated player Avery Curran (Kitchener, Ontario, CANADA Resurrection Catholic) and junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC third baseman Mia Maddamma (North Royalton)
In the Circle
  • Senior right hander Katie Barnhart (North Ridgeville) picked up the win as she allowed one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 3.2 innings pitched.
  • Sophomore righty Breckyn Daniel (Berea/Berea-Midpark) earned her first career save as she allowed one unearned run on one hit with one strikeout in the final 1.1 innings
In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored 15 runs on 14 hits as they plated five runs in the first inning, five runs in the second, including three on the three-run blast by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC center fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville), two in the third and three in the fourth, including two on the two-run bomb by Curran.   The Comets scored seven runs on eight hits as they pushed five runs across the plate in the second and two in the third.

At the Plate
  • Vaillant went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs
  • Mraz went 2-for-2 with a homer, two runs scored, four RBIs and a walk
  • Peterkoski went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and RBI
  • Freshman shortstop Morgan Palos (Elyria) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, RBI and walk
  • Junior Academic All-OAC catcher Mia Strizak (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs
  • Three other BW hitters tallied a hit highlighted by the Curran homer, a double from Maddamma and a triple from senior Academic All-OAC second baseman Sabrina Burke (London)
In the Circle
  • Daniel picked earned her fifth win of the season as she allowed seven runs on eight hits with a career-high tying four strikeouts and no walks in four innings.
  • Freshman right hander Bailey Licht (Eastlake/North) pitched a scoreless and hit less fifth inning with one strikeout
BW is back in action on Friday, April 3 when it hosts an OAC doubleheader against Otterbein University at 1 p.m.
