BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team stayed unbeaten at home with a sweep of Otterbein University in a rescheduled Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at the BW Softball Field inside the Roehm Athletic Complex.
BW (11-5, 4-2 OAC) and Otterbein (8-12, 1-5 OAC) were originally scheduled to play on April 3 but moved the games up a day due to forecasted inclement weather.
In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored six runs on10 hits as they plated two runs in the first inning, three in the third, including the first the homerun of the season for junior Academic All-OAC right fielder
Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) and one in the third. The Cardinals scored three runs on six hits as they pushed one run across the plate in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
At the Plate
- Senior Academic All-OAC second baseman Sabrina Burke (London) went 2-for-2 with a triple, one run scored, one run batted-in (RBI) and two walks
- Junior All-OAC left fielder Sam Peterkoski (Berea/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and stolen base
- Smearman went 2-for-3 with a homer, run scored and RBI
- Four other BW hitters had a base knock highlighted by the doubles from senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC center fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville) and junior Academic All-OAC catcher Mia Strizak (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark)
In the Circle
- Senior right hander Katie Barnhart (North Ridgeville) won her fifth game of the season as she allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk in four innings pitched
- Sophomore righty Breckyn Daniel (Berea/Berea-Midpark) earned her second save as she pitched three scoreless innings with one hit, career-high five strikeouts and two walks
In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored five runs on five hits as they plated two runs in the second off the blast by
Mraz and three in the sixth including the game-winning single by senior first baseman
Avery Curran (Kitchener, Ontario, CANADA/Resurrection Catholic) and a two-run insurance homerun by freshman
shortstop Morgan Palos (Elyria). Otterbein scored two runs on seven hits as it pushed both runs across the plate in the first.
At the Plate
- Palos went 2-for-3 with a homer, her first career triple, two runs scored and two RBIs
- Burke went 1-for-3 with the game winning run scored and stolen base
- Curran went 1-for-3 with a run scored and the game-winning RBI
- Mraz went 1-for-3 with a homer, run scored and two RBIs

- Daniel won her sixth game of the season as she allowed two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk
BW is back in action on Wednesday, April 8 when it travels to Alliance for an OAC doubleheader against the University of Mount Union on 23rd Street Field at 1 p.m.
