Curran Goes Yard Three Times, Softball Earns Split in OAC Clash with #18 Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio –  Senior first baseman Avery Curran (Kitchener, Ontario, CANADA/Resurrection Catholic) blasted three homeruns as the Baldwin Wallace University softball team split a key Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with No. 18 nationally ranked University of Mount Union in an on the 23rd Street Field.

In game one, BW (12-6, 5-3 OAC) scored three runs on two hits as it plated one run in the fifth on the solo shot from junior designated player Lexie Vaillant (Bowling Green/Perrysburg) and two in the sixth off the blast from Curran.   Mount Union (17-5, 7-1 OAC) scored four runs on five hits as it pushed all of its runs across the plate in the sixth inning.

At the Plate
  • Curran went 1-for-2 with a homerun, run scored and two runs batted-in (RBIs) and a walk
  • Vaillant went 1-for-3 with a homerun, run scored and RBI
In the Circle
  • Junior right hander Katie Barnhart (North Ridgeville) suffered the loss as she allowed four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks in six innings.
In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored 11 runs on 12 hits as they plated four runs in the third inning, three in the fifth, including two on the blast by Curran and fourth in the seventh, including three on the shot by senior Academic All-OAC right fielder Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) and one on the second homer of the game for Curran.  The Purple Raiders scored 10 runs on 12 hits as they pushed three runs across the plate in the first inning, three in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the seventh.

At the Plate
  • Curran went 3-for-3 with a career-best two home runs, career-high three runs scored, a career-best five RBIs and a walk
  • Senior Academic All-OAC second baseman Sabrina Burke (London) went 2-for-5 with a run scored
  • Junior All-OAC left fielder Sam Peterkoski (Berea/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-5 with a run scored and stolen base
  • Five other BW hitters had a base knock highlighted by the three-run homer by Smearman and the two-run triple by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC center fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville)
In the Circle
  • Sophomore righty Breckyn Daniel (Berea/Berea-Midpark) got the start and no decision as she allowed eight runs (seven earned) 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks in four innings
  • Freshman right hander Bailey Licht (Eastlake/North) recorded her first career win as she allowed one run on two hits with one walk in 2.1 innings pitched
  • Barnhart tallied her first career save as she allowed no runs on no hits in the final two-thirds of an inning
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, April 11 when they host an OAC doubleheader against Muskingum University on the BW softball Field inside the Roehm Athletic Complex at 1 p.m.
