Women’s Volleyball Earns Five-Set Victory over Blue Streaks to Start 2026 Season

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's volleyball team, led by Head Coach Kate Latkovic, started the 2026 campaign with a 3-2 victory over the John Carroll University Blue Streaks in the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
 
Game Recap
 
Set 1 (JCU, 25-19): The Blue Streaks started the match with a 6-1 advantage. John Carroll never let the Jackets get within a point of their lead the entire set. BW led in kills with 11, but they also had 11 attack errors.

Set 2 (BW, 25-22): BW responded by putting the pressure on the Blue Streaks and holding the lead for the majority of the second set. Junior Josie Lynn, junior Lyla Nash, and senior Lexi Smith all had three kills each. Smith put the ribbon on the set victory by earning the kill to tie the match 1-1.  

Set 3 (JCU, 25-14): John Carroll bounced back with a stunning offensive effort, holding the Yellow Jackets to a .071 hitting percentage to their .429 hitting percentage. BW could not find answers offensively, totaling seven attack errors and never finding a lead.

Set 4 (BW, 25-23): There were four lead changes in the first 11 rallies, and then BW's 4-0 run cemented their lead for good. John Carroll fought back several times, including a late run to make the score 24-23 BW. Freshman middle hitter Morgan Petrecca saved the set by earning a kill to force the match to five.

Set 5 (BW, 15-9): BW proved that they were the better team at the DeCarlo Varsity Center tonight by leading in hitting percentage, service aces, and kills in the final set. They never lost their lead, maintaining composure by only letting up one attack error and two service errors. Freshman outside hitter Brenna Leach sealed the Jackets' victory with a kill to cap a 4-0 run to the finish line.
 
The Matchup
 
BW entered tonight's match with a .500 all-time winning percentage against John Carroll, and they improved to 12-11. The previous two matchups were won by John Carroll.
 
Looking Ahead
 
BW heads to Tiffin, Ohio to compete in the Great Lakes Crossover against the Adrian College Bulldogs on Friday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m. inside the Seiberling Gymnasium at Heidelberg University.
 
The Bulldogs will be making their regular season debut on Friday at 3:00 p.m. against Hanover College in the Great Lakes Crossover.
