BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team defeated Denison University by a final score of 1-0 on the turf of George Finnie Stadium after a 54-minute weather delay to snap a three-game losing streak.
The Brown and Gold had six shot attempts in the game, with five of them being on target including the goal
Audrey Hellickson scored, which was assisted by
Hayden Elmlinger and ultimately became a game-deciding factor. Collecting their third win in just six games, last year the program needed eight games to pick up their first.
Game Recap
After the delay, BW was aggressive on offense to start the day off, taking two of the first three shots along with a corner kick. They were quiet for the remainder of the opening half, taking just one shot while having to utilize their defense. Despite the dominance in nearly every offensive cylinder for the Big Red, the Brown and Gold took three corner kicks in contrast to Denison's two.
Shortly after the second half began, Hellickson scored to give the Yellow Jackets the lead, 1-0. The freshman scored her first goal of the season, with Elmlinger picking up the first assist of her career.
For the remainder of the half, the BW defense performed at its finest for the second straight block of 45 minutes. The Big Red took a total of 13 shots in the final half, including three that hit multiple parts of the goal post. Goalkeeper
Mackenzie Butcher recorded 15 saves, her season-best, and was perfect on her percentage. It is her second game of the season in which she has shut an opponent out en route to a win over Denison, improving her record to 2-2 in games she has started at net.
The Matchup
The match is the third time since 2008 that the Yellow Jackets and Big Red have played each other. The Yellow Jackets are 1-2 in those games.
Looking Ahead
After a week off, the Yellow Jackets take the field on Sunday, September 20, as they travel to Pittsburgh for a non-conference out-of-state showdown at Carnegie Mellon University on the CMU Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
