OBERLIN, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's volleyball team collected two wins in their visit to Oberlin College to compete in the Crimson and Gold Quad inside Philips Gymnasium. BW took down Olivet by a score of 3-1 (25-13, 25-19, 21-25, 25-19) and swept Trine 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-16). The Yellow Jackets are approaching the program's longest winning streak to start a season since the 2019 team began 13-0.
Olivet Recap
Set 1 (BW, 25-13): BW had an early 5-5 tie and then proceeded to break it open with a 13-1 scoring run to give them an insurmountable 18-6 lead. Freshman defensive specialist
Libby Hubert led most of this run from the serving line while contributing three service aces. Junior outside hitter
Lyla Nash led the offense with four kills.
Set 2 (BW, 25-19): Olivet was applying the pressure early as they held an 11-8 lead with only one tie leading up to that point. The Yellow Jackets then locked in for a 10-2 scoring run to put them in the lead for good. This run was led by junior middle hitter
Josie Lynn who had three kills, and she totaled five in the second set.
Set 3 (Olivet, 25-21): The Comets played their cleanest set offensively with 16 kills and a .297 hitting efficiency while capitalizing on the Yellow Jackets' errors. Olivet gained the lead after a 7-7 tie and held the lead until the end. Lynn continued to boost the offense with four more kills.
Set 4 (BW, 25-19): The Brown and Gold offense fired on all cylinders with a match-high 20 kills and a .325 hitting efficiency. Freshman outside hitter
Brenna Leach boosted the offense with an impressive seven kills, including three on a 4-0 run to make the score 14-10. Junior setter
Anna Stankard helped support the offense with eight assists to total 22 in the match.
Trine Recap
Set 1 (BW, 25-22): The Trine Thunder were very competitive and led the Yellow Jackets for much of the set. They capitalized on a service error with a 4-0 run to get ahead 19-15. With an 18-22 deficit, Stankard and Leach picked up the offense and led an improbable 7-0 run to win the set. Stankard was the server and contributed three assists while Leach made three consecutive kills in the sequence.
Set 2 (BW, 25-22): The BW defense was the difference in another close victory. Freshman middle hitter
Morgan Petrecca had four blocks to lead the team. Senior right side hitter
Lexi Smith also hammered down five kills, leading the offense. BW took advantage of Trine's match-high 10 errors to win set two.
Set 3 (BW, 25-16): Lynn helped to set the tone by earning four kills early to give BW a 6-3 lead. She also contributed a solo block and a block assist. Trine faltered offensively with eight errors on nine kills for a .024 hitting percentage. The Yellow Jackets closed their weekend with a 7-1 scoring run to finish the sweep.
Women's volleyball will head south on I-71 to compete against The College of Wooster Fighting Scots on Tuesday, September 22 inside Timken Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
